Big Change to April 24 presentation location and subject!
Our April guest speaker, Gary Gillette, was unexpectedly called to Anchorage. Thankfully, Richard Mattson has agreed to present a Treadwell Mine Historic Park Walking Tour this coming Saturday the 24th at 1 pm. Spring is the best time for visibility of relics.
Many of you know Rich from his countless years working as the DIPAC Salmon Hatchery aquarium manager and education coordinator or because he is a director within the Gastineau Channel Historical Society. Rich grew up playing in the Treadwell area in Douglas in the late 1950‘s and early 60’s. This led to a life-long passion to learn the full story of Treadwell, discover the history of the remaining artifacts in the area, and to share it with our community.
On this field trip, we will discover the fascinating history of the world-famous Treadwell gold mine complex, Alaska’s first large industrial development. From 1881 – 1922, the Treadwell mines (4 adjoining mines operated by 3 companies under 1 unified management) set world records in gold mining technology and production.
Former GGS secretary Carol Bruce also grew up in Douglas and arranged this excursion. In addition to being a great area to play, Treadwell mine beach property was the preferred location for Mayflower and Mt. Jumbo School annual end-of- year class picnics for both Carol and Rich.
The tour will be approximately 1-1/2 hours in length. Maximum group is 20 adults and the tour is on hiking paths in the CBJ Treadwell Historic Park area. Trail rating is easy – mostly level trail with short hilly sections.
This tour is limited to 20 active GGS members only.
Please email GGSjuno@gmail.com to preregister and you will be emailed a confirmation.
No pets. You must wear a mask. Dress for the weather.
Park at Sandy Beach and we will meet at the original stamp mill location where the trail actually starts. Tour will start promptly at 1 pm at the pathway just a little ways beyond both shelters.
Welcome to our Gastineau Genealogical Society Website.
History of the Gastineau Genealogical Society - The Society was officially founded in July 1985 by the late O. R. “Dick” Kent and Mary Zahn of Juneau Alaska. Prior to that, they were a loose-knit organization whose goals were similar to those we have today. Becoming official provided the group the benefit of biannually electing officers, scheduling regular meetings, and building of the library reference collection. Another impetus was that, by becoming an organization, they gained access to and the ability to purchase genealogical information. Such included microfilms that weren’t available to individuals at that time.
Our Society Today - Today we continue to welcome guests and new members who are interested in genealogy and family history. Our purpose includes promoting, stimulating interest, and supporting genealogical research and education, particularly within the City and Borough of Juneau, State of Alaska, and Yukon Territory of Canada. If you are a genealogist – whether you are just beginning to trace your family ancestry or have years of experience – we invite you to join us.
We remain committed to the goal of preserving the legacy of our past for future generations and helping each other along the way. We have no employees and, as a Society, will not do lookups or in-depth research. However, some individual members will perform Lookups in the specific resources or subjects they have listed. GGS has mortuary and church and cemetery records, pertinent genealogical and historical books and maps, local census records, death indexes, hosted seminars and workshops, and taught research skills classes at local libraries. Our members meet monthly, September through November and January through May. Generally meetings are from 1:00 – 2:30 pm on the fourth Saturday of those months. Normally, we have a short business meeting followed by a one-hour featured presentation. We try to fit in time for chatting, refreshments, browsing through genealogy books, or answering questions.
Currently there is no charge or dues to attend our meetings and if you find our group helpful, we hope you would consider becoming a regularly attending member.
