...The Flood Warning will expire at 600 PM akst for urban areas and

The heavy rain that has affected the area over the last 24 hours has
diminished with light showers expected through the rest of the

throughout the day from around the area. 24 hour rainfall amounts of

and Gustavus southward with the highest amounts reported in the
southern Panhandle and along the outer coast. Two landslides were
reported blocking roads and cutting power lines on Prince of Wales
Island with another Road washed out. Another landslide north of
Ketchikan knocked out power. The Sitka area had landslides and
flooding on Cascade Creek Road with one house impacted. Various
other houses and parking lots in Sitka reported flooding with one
house damaged by another landslide. Several reports of small
avalanches and street flooding were also reported in the Juneau area
throughout the day.
This will be the final statement on this event.

NWS Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 10:36 AM AKST on January 14, 2014
The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a
* Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams due to rain and
melting snow for...small streams across the central and southern
Panhandle...including the Staney Creek near Klawock.
* Until 600 PM akst Tuesday
* At 1030 am akst...the Staney Creek near Klawock was reporting a
stage of 17.4 feet and still rising from heavy rainfall rates of 1
to 1.5 inches every 6 hours. Moderate flood stage for Staney creek
is 17.5 feet. The current stage has exceeded the record stage of
17.2 feet from October of 1993. At 10 am akst Montana Creek near
Juneau was at 13.5 feet and rising rapidly. Minor flood stage is at
15.5 feet. Rainfall rates in the Mendenhall Valley are approximately
1.5 inches every 6 hours. Jordan Creek is at 9.0 as of 10 am akst.
Minor flood stage for Jordan Creek is at 9.7 feet. Both Montana
Creek and Jordan Creek may exceed minor flood stage later this
afternoon as more heavy rain is likely to fall before tapering off
through the afternoon.
* A mudslide has been reported between Coffman Cove Junction and
Control Lake Junction at milepost 21. Other mudslides will or have
already occurred over the area as rainfall rates will continue to be
in excess of 1 to 1.5 inches every 6 hours. In addition...Road
washouts are possible in areas of high stream levels.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
If you live near or along Staney Creek or other small streams in the
warned area...stay alert and be prepared to take action.
Mudslides have been reported in areas of steep terrain.
Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any flooding to
your law enforcement agency. They will relay your report to the
National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau.
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice...turn around...don't drown.
