- 1405: NWS: Flood Advisory for a glacial dammed
lake outburst on the... Taku River
Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 2:05 PM AKDT on July 30, 2012
The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a
* Flood Advisory for a glacial dammed lake outburst on the...
Taku River
* until 400 am akdt Wednesday
* at 109 PM akdt...the Taku River reached 39.74 feet. The water
level along the Taku River has continued to steadily rise with the
water temperatures falling. This indicates the glacial dammed
lake above the Taku Glacier known as Lake No Lake is releasing.
* At the current rate the river would crest around 43.1 ft...
just above the minor flood stage of 43 feet late Tuesday afternoon.
Once the Taku River crests...the water level will
steadily fall and return to normal water levels.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
If you live near or along the Taku River stay alert and be
prepared to take action as water levels rise and as outflow from
the river reaches low lying areas. Pieces of debris will also likely
be seen on the river as a result of the release.
The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia
and lower the time required to cause hypothermia.
Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio for updates on this
situation.
A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding
of water is occurring or is imminent.

RETURN TO NORMAL WATER LEVELS.
OVER THE PAST 24 YEARS THE AVERAGE FLOW OF WATER FROM LAKE NO
LAKE IS AROUND 48,000 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND. THE PRESENT FLOW IS
51,000. THE CREST IS LIKELY TO BE JUST BELOW MINOR FLOOD STAGE
TUESDAY AFTERNOON. RECENT VISUAL REPORTS HAVE INDICATED THAT LAKE
NO LAKE IS FULL AND POTENTIALLY HAS MORE WATER THAN USUAL. THIS
COULD RESULT IN A HIGHER THAN EXPECTED RISE IN WATER LEVELS BUT AT
THIS TIME THERE IS STILL UNCERTAINTY ON CREST HEIGHT.
MAIN IMPACTS AT THIS TIME WILL BE COLDER THAN NORMAL WATER
TEMPERATURES INCREASING THE RISK FOR HYPOTHERMIA. PIECES OF DEBRIS
WILL ALSO LIKELY BE SEEN ON THE RIVER AS A RESULT OF THE RELEASE.
PEOPLE ON OR ALONG THE RIVER SHOULD BE AWARE OF RISING RIVER
LEVELS AND STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO FOR UPDATES ON THIS
SITUATION.

NWS Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 12:07 PM AKDT on July 06, 2012
...The Flood Advisory remains in effect until 600 PM akdt Friday for
a glacial dammed lake outburst on Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall
River...
At 1156 PM akdt...Mendenhall Lake has risen to 8.31 ft. Both the
lake and river are expected to continue to rise through Friday
morning as water drains out from Suicide Basin. The current crest
forecast for Mendenhall Lake is 9.54 ft and 12.08 ft for the
Mendenhall River. The lake and river are expected to reach minor
flood stage around 3 am Friday morning and crest around 10 am.
When the USGS river gauge on Mendenhall Lake reads 9 ft water will
begin to cover West Glacier Spur Road between Skaters Cabin and West
Glacier trailhead. At 9.5 ft...there will be approximately 6 inches
of water over the West Glacier Spur Road. Additionally...water will
flow into the Mendenhall Lake campground and the West Glacier trail
is closed to hikers at this time.
When the Mendenhall River stage rises to 11.5 ft property and
yards along view drive begin to inundate...causing minor
flooding.
Rain will cause considerable ponding of water in low lying areas,
near culverts, and along small creeks and drainages.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
When the USGS river gauge on Mendenhall Lake reads 9 ft water will
begin to cover West Glacier Spur Road between Skaters Cabin and West
Glacier trailhead in the Juneau area.
The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia
and lower the time required to cause hypothermia.
If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to higher ground to
escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when
water begins to rise.
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.
Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any minor
flooding to your law enforcement agency. They will relay your report
to the National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau.
A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.
