NWS Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 4:24 PM AKDT on July 25, 2009
...Hot and dry weather expected next week...
High pressure is strengthening over Southeast Alaska and
northwest Canada this weekend. The high is already causing skies
to clear and temperatures to warm over southern portions of the
Panhandle but clouds from a dying front in the central Gulf of
Alaska will delay the significant warming along the northeast Gulf
Coast and northern Panhandle until Tuesday.
By Wednesday and Thursday daytime high temperatures are likely to
be 15 to 25 degrees above average...especially over interior
sections of Southeast Alaska. Most interior areas will reach the
80s at that time...however some isolated locations may get to the
lower 90s.
The well above average temperatures will increase Glacier melt
causing additional runoff and a slow rise of glacial rivers and
streams next week. Fire danger will also increase due to the hot
and dry conditions.
- 1550: Partly Cloudy.
- 1450: Partly Cloudy.
- 1350: Partly Cloudy.

Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 3:54 PM AKDT on July 23, 2009
...The Flood Warning remains in effect until 700 PM akdt Friday for a
glacial dammed lake outburst for Lake Nolake on the Taku River...
* at 330 PM akdt...the annual release of the Glacier dammed Lake No
lake into the Taku River is ongoing. The current stage of the Taku
river is 42.85 feet and continuing to rise at a steady rate. It is
expected that the Taku River will crest between 44 and 45 feet by
Friday afternoon. As with the above average snow pack this winter
along with above average temperatures this Summer this outburst
flood could be a repeat of the 2004 event. There is high
probability that moderate flood stage of 44 feet will be exceeded
with the possibility of reaching major flood stage of 45 feet.
* Moderate flood waters will cause the river to inundate yards and
some homes. If the water continues to rise above 45 feet numerous
homes could flood and cause damage to property. Along with the
flooding there will be a lot of debris flowing down the river along
with ice chunks that can damage docks.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
If you live near or along Taku River stay alert and be prepared to
take action.
The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia
and lower the time required to cause hypothermia.
Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite local
weather news source for updates on this situation.

NWS Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 4:07 PM AKDT on July 22, 2009
...Sunny hot and dry weather late this weekend into next week...
Another stretch of dry weather and above normal temperatures
is in store for the Panhandle. A very strong high pressure system
will build over the Panhandle late this weekend from the south
and persist well into next week. The high pressure will clear the
clouds away from Southeast Alaska beginning on Saturday
afternoon. Sunny skies along with very warm air from the south
will cause temperatures to climb into the mid 70s through the low
80s on Sunday and these warm temperatures will persist into next
week. Some record temperatures into the mid 80s are possible.
The above normal temperatures will cause large rivers and rivers
with Glacier sources to slowly rise by mid next week. A Glacier
dam has released on the Taku River but only minor flooding is
expected there on Saturday.
- 1550: Light Sprinkling, Cloudy, very tops
- tops of the mainland mountains in clouds,
a few lower clouds Channel side of Mt. Juneau,
remainder of mainland slightly to partially
obscured.
- 1535: Cloudy, very tops of the mainland mountains

Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 3:02 PM AKDT on July 22, 2009
The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a
* flood advisory for a glacial dammed lake outburst on the Taku
River.
* Until 245 PM akdt Saturday
* at 252 PM akdt...a rapid rise in the Taku River level was observed
along with a corresponding rapid drop in water temperature. These
are strong indications of Lake Nolake Glacier dam release.
* The Taku River is forecasted to rise to a flood stage of 43.0
feet. Minor flooding is expected.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia
and lower the time required to cause hypothermia.
Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite local
weather news source for updates on this situation.
A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 4:31 AM AKDT on July 22, 2009
...Record temperatures late this weekend into next week...
Another nice stretch of dry weather and above normal temperatures
is in store for the Panhandle. A very strong high pressure will
build over the Panhandle late this weekend from the south and
remain over the area into early next week. The high pressure will
clear the clouds away from Southeast Alaska beginning on Saturday
continuing into early next week. Sunny skies along with very warm
air from the south will cause temperatures to climb into the mid
70s through the low 80s on Sunday and these warm temperatures will
persist into early next week.
The above normal temperatures will cause large rivers and rivers
with Glacier sources to slowly rise by mid next week.
