- 1249: NWS: Warming trend to cause water problems Tuesday
through Thursday.
NWS Special Weather Statement
1249 PM AST Sun Feb 10 2008
...Warming trend to cause water problems Tuesday through Thursday...
Arctic air is retreating from Southeast Alaska as a series of warm
fronts move onto the coast. Rising temperatures combined with
rainfall on the snow pack will cause standing water to form in low
lying areas. Drainage in some locations will be hampered by an
ice layer well below the surface. Expect some local streams to
begin flowing with increasing water levels.
Rainfall on snow will increase the weight of the snow Load.
Persons should begin to remove deep snow layers from structures
where increased Load may be a problem. Boat owners are advised to
clear snow from decks and ensure that bilge pumps are operable.
Standing water that develops on roadways may also be a hazard.
Some areas may experience freeze-thaw cycles where standing water
refreezes.

Special Weather Statement

...A winter storm possible late Friday night through Saturday...
A storm force low pressure system will move into the eastern Gulf
of Alaska on Saturday and into British Columbia on Sunday. Warm
moist air will begin to move over Southeast Alaska on Friday night
over the Arctic air already near the surface.
Snow is likely for the southern Panhandle Friday night becoming
heavy by midnight. Moderate to heavy snow will spread across the
central and northern Panhandle on Saturday morning. Gale and storm
force winds plus heavy freezing spray ahead of this system will
make marine travel hazardous. In addition to locally heavy
snowfall...areas of blowing snow with visibility below one mile
are likely over land. Very cold wind chills during this storm could
be an additional hazard.
Persons across Southeast Alaska especially those with travel plans
should monitor this potential storm closely. Stay tuned to NOAA

NWS Special Weather Statement
941 am AST Fri Feb 1 2008
...Very low water content in snow today...
Snow is falling into the very cold air over the Panhandle today.
These cold temperatures are creating much drier snow than the area
is used to and is more typical of interior Alaska weather. Usually
snow to liquid ratios are 10 to 1 or 20 to 1 over Southeast
Alaska...but today snow ratios are as high as 80 to 1. The Juneau
forecast office recorded 4 inches of snow from 3 am to 9 am this
morning...but only five hundredths of melted equivalent. Fast
moving vehicles are easily blowing the snow and creating low
visibility on area roads.
Another winter storm may bring heavier snow Saturday night into
Sunday.
