...First storm of the fall season moving into the Gulf of Alaska
this weekend...
The first major low pressure system of the fall season is
forecast to move into Gulf of Alaska this weekend. Currently
developing 600 nm south of Dutch Harbor on the remnants of an old
typhoon...this low is expected strengthen as it moves into the
southwest Gulf Friday and reach maximum strength of 977 mb over
the central Gulf Saturday. This low then moves into the northeast
Gulf and weakens through Monday.
Gale to possibly storm force winds are forecast to move into the
southern Gulf Friday and spread into the eastern Gulf by Friday
night. Southeast winds of 30 to 45 kt are expected across the
eastern Gulf Friday night and Saturday followed by southwest
winds of 30 to 45 kt Sunday. Combined seas will start to build
across the offshore waters Friday and forecast to reach 23 feet
Saturday. Combined seas build in the coastal waters Friday night
and Saturday and reach 23 feet along the central coast Saturday
night. A 15 to 20 foot sea will continue Sunday mainly due to
southwest swell.
Winds through most of the Inner Channels are expected to be in
the 20 to 30 kt range Saturday with gale force winds likely near
ocean entrances.
Mariners sailing in the Gulf of Alaska this weekend should begin
