The month of October began with some really fine autumn weather. Clear skies and dry conditions provided for the warmest days and coldest nights of the month during the first week. A continuation of the unusually warm and dry September weather seemed like it would persist. The situation changed before the end of the first week, when the first in a series of several atmospheric rivers moved in from the northern Pacific Ocean. Weather fronts with a lot of much needed rain began to affect Southeast Alaska every few days and beginning with the second week of the month, rare was the day when there was no measurable precipitation over the northeast gulf coast and northern two thirds of the Panhandle. In the end, Yakutat and Juneau both recorded above normal precipitation for the month. The situation over the central and southern Panhandle was not quite as wet. Sitka saw only 77% of their normal October precipitation and Ketchikan recorded only 62% of their normal monthly rainfall. Still, the situation over the southern Panhandle is somewhat better than it was in September, in that the monthly precipitation deficit was much less. However, portions of the southern Panhandle remain in a severe drought and significant impacts to communities located there persist. Despite the improvement, Ketchikan's October 2018 still ranked as the 8th driest October on record with a mere 11.58 inches of rain. While Ketchikan, Sitka, and Petersburg all ranked in top twenty driest Octobers, contrarily Juneau and Skagway experienced top twenty wettest Octobers in 2018. All of Southeast Alaska saw above normal temperatures for the month as well. In fact, Yakutat experienced its warmest October ever with an average temperature of 46.5 degrees, besting the 45.9 degrees from 1980. Sitka matched its previous all-time record this year of 50.6 degrees last reached in 1986. Juneau's October 2018 became the third warmest October on record, missing the record of 45.8 degrees from 1993 by a thin margin of 0.3 degrees. And Skagway also experienced their third warmest October of record with 45.7 degrees. Several other sites including Ketchikan, Petersburg, and Haines all reached top twenty warmest Octobers on record. While it has become common to hear of above normal monthly average temperatures, this has usually been the result of warmer than normal overnight lows more so than warmer daytime highs. October departed from this trend significantly in that the daytime highs were warmer than normal by nearly as much as the overnight lows. While there were some cooler than normal days in all 4 of the climate stations covered by this climate summary, they were vastly outnumbered in both quantity and absolute value by the warmer than normal days. On numerous occasions, daily average temperatures were more than 8 degrees above normal. Yakutat recorded the largest deviations with 2 days which were more than 12 degrees above the norm. In some cases, daily average temperatures were more than 12 degrees above normal. --------------------------------------------------------------------
