Flood Warning for theTaku River in effect... For the Taku River downstream of the Canadian boarder, minor flooding is occurring, with a stage of 43.7 ft at 7 am Friday. The river continues to rise and is expected to exceed moderate flood stage of 44.0 feet Friday afternoon. Flood stage is 43.0 ft. At 43 feet water is over the bank and out buildings near the gauge flood. This is a minor flood. At 44.6 ft, the water level will be at the door jam of the house near the gauge. This is a moderate flood. The flood of record is 44.1 feet set on August 17 1989. This flood is the result of the annual Glacial Lake release in British Columbia on the Tulsequah River. This years release is the earliest on record and is producing unusually high flows. Typically, peak flows last for about 1 day with the entire event lasting 2 to 3 days. Water levels should start to recede on Saturday. This is a dangerous situation and person along the Taku River may need to seek higher ground. Docks and structures along the river could be damaged by the flood waters. Water temperatures are quite cold and are capable of producing hypothermia. Boaters on the river and in Taku Inlet should be aware of large debris. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 0950: Clear with haze. Hot weather continuing across Southeast Alaska... Hot weather continued on Sunday making it the third day in a row that numerous records were broken across Southeast Alaska. At the Juneau Airport the new record high temperatures set were 84 degrees on Friday and 85 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. Four consecutive days is the longest recorded string that the Juneau Airport has ever had of temperatures above 80 degrees. Continuing warm weather on Monday and Tuesday will make it likely that this record will be broken. In the southern Panhandle high temperatures at several stations have been in the lower 90s since Friday. The weather service office on Annette Island reached 93 degrees on Saturday and 91 degrees on Sunday. These are the highest two maximum temperatures ever recorded at that location. Conditions will cool off slightly on Monday and Tuesday however highs in the 80s throughout the Panhandle will still break numerous records. Above average temperatures are expected to continue into next weekend. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2114: Noticed the Fireweed Blossoms started opening today. 2059: 3 European Starlings in willow by deck (we rarely see them at this time of year). 2050: Clear. 1950: Clear. 1850: Clear. 1750: Clear. 1650: Clear. 1550: Clear. 1450: Clear. 1350: Clear with high very thin haze. 1250: Clear with high very thin haze. 1150: Clear with high very thin haze. 1050: Clear with high very thin haze. 0950: Clear. 0850: Clear. 0800: A 2nd Steller's Jay is taking a bath in the Bird Bath. 0758: A Steller's Jay is taking a bath in the Bird Bath. 0750: Clear. 0650: Clear. 0620: Clear. 0550: Clear. ------------------------------------------------------------- Posted 0600: NWS - Record Highs Set in SE AK on June 19 Statement as of 10:00 PM ADT on June 19, 2004 ...
