The month started out with return of a more moist pattern and a shift away from the heat and dry weather of July. Rain was mostly confined to more northerly locations for the first two weeks of the month. In general, the average pattern consisted of a low over the eastern Gulf with a ridge of high pressure encroaching from the Yukon. Heavy rain fell during the second week of the month as a result of two separate atmospheric river events and some daily records were set. Yakutat set a record daily maximum rainfall of 4.25" on August 7th, breaking a 50-year-old record set back in 1963, and again on August 13th with 3.33", breaking the previous record from 1961. Sitka airport recorded record rainfall late in the month with 1.33 inches on the 28th of August. Many Coop precipitation records broken as well on August 8th and 9th, including Pelican 2- day total of 8.95". During the first event, flood warnings were issued for the Taiya River (crested at 18.2 feet) and Mendenhall Lake (crested at 10.4 feet). A flood advisory was issued for the Taiya during the second, which was the remnants of Typhoon Shanshan. The precipitation situation over the southern half of the panhandle was somewhat different with most locations recording a deficit for the month. Of note, the Ketchikan area finished the month with less than half of their normal August precipitation. Despite two atmospheric river events and multiple precipitation records being broken, many locations, north and south, are still below normal for the year for accumulated precipitation, and moderate drought conditions persist for much of the Southeastern Alaska. The monthly average temperature departure ranged from half a degree to 3 degrees above normal for August. Numerous daily high temperature records were set at various climate and COOP sites, but none were set at any of the 4 major climate stations. Average minimum temperatures ranked in the top 10 warmest for the month due to excessive cloud cover. Not surprisingly, no overnight low temperature records were set. -------------------------------------------------------------------- SUNDAY 9/02/18: 2020 ADT: Partly Cloudy/Mostly Clear. 1950: Partly Cloudy with very, very thin to thinnish clouds, the Sun has effectively set (Sunset at 1954). 1850: Partly Cloudy with very, very thin to thinnish clouds, very slightly - slightly weakened sunshine on the mainland. 1820: Slightly weakened sunshine, only on the mainland now. 1750: Very, very thin to thin clouds over much of the sky, very slightly weakened sunshine. 1720: Mostly Clear. 1650: Mostly Clear/Partly Cloudy with very, very thin clouds to some cumulus clouds, full sunshine. 1550: Partly Cloudy with very, very thin to thicker clouds, full sunshine in most areas. 1450: Very, very thin to thinnish clouds over most of the sky, full or very slightly weakened sunshine. 1420: Partly/Mostly Cloudy with very, very thin to thinnish clouds, variable sunshine. 1350: Mostly Clear. 1250: Clear, a few scattered mostly very tiny clouds and wisps. 1150: Clear, a few lower tiny bits and wisps of clouds. 1050: Clear with a few clouds, band by the upper S slope of Mt.
