In what is normally one of the driest months of the year for Southeast Alaska, April brought some relief from the multi-month precipitation deficit that the region has endured since late January. While the entire Panhandle is still listed as abnormally dry in the United States Drought Monitor, the southern half of the Panhandle has improved from moderate drought conditions in the latest release dated April 26th. The lack of precipitation witnessed earlier this year continued into the first half of April for much of the Panhandle. The exception was the southern zones, where precipitation slowly but steadily accumulated beginning early in the month. On April 17th, an abrupt shift to a significantly wetter weather pattern occurred and all of Southeast Alaska began seeing meaningful accumulations that surpassed the normal trend for April. By the end of the month, the southern portions of the Panhandle recorded above normal totals for the month. Juneau ended the month ever so slightly above normal, while the central outer coast and northeast Gulf coast remained slightly below normal for the month. Many daily precipitations were broken on March 23rd across most of the Panhandle. Total accumulations for the year-to-date are still decidedly below normal however, and, as indicated above, all of Southeast Alaska remains abnormally dry. Daytime highs for the first half of the month trended warmer than normal from the second week through the middle of the month and numerous high temperature records were broken during this time. Fair skies also allowed overnight lows to dip below normal at times, though not as consistently as the above normal highs. As the 2017-2018 snow season draws to a close, the general trend for accumulated snow appears to have followed the total precipitation pattern and finished below normal. Specifics and details regarding snowfall are hard to pinpoint due to a lack of stations that report snow in some cases and a lack of 30-year normals for other stations. --------------------------------------------------------------------
