Special Weather Statement National Weather Service Juneau AK 923 AM AKDT Tue Jun 26 2018 AKZ025-271730- Juneau Borough and Northern Admiralty Island- Including the city of Juneau 923 AM AKDT Tue Jun 26 2018 ...MINOR RELEASE FOLLOWING CALVING EVENT AT SUICIDE BASIN... An event which occurred yesterday at Suicide Basin has been evaluated to have not been a significant release of water into Mendenhall Lake. Scientists on site at Suicide Basin at the time of the event documented a significant calving event where ice from the Mendenhall Glacier broke off and settled into Suicide Basin. While still attached to Mendenhall Glacier, this section of ice was partially submerged. Upon calving, this section of ice floated to the surface within Suicide Basin, causing a visible and measurable drop in the water level. Coincidentally, scientists at that very moment were performing routine maintenance to the sensor located within the basin which caused a very dramatic change in the reported water depth. Once the situation within the basin had stabilized, the net decrease in water depth was minor. Again, this was observed and recorded by scientists on site at the time of the event. While the details of yesterday's event are still being closely studied, it is unknown when Suicide Basin will next release. For the past several years, the basin has periodically released large amounts of water into Mendenhall Lake during the summer months, causing flooding along the shore of Mendenhall Lake as well as Mendenhall River. It is highly likely that at some point during this summer the basin will produce a significant release. Due to the nature of the basin, the unknowns of the basin's physical characteristics, and the fact that Suicide Basin has been actively releasing for less than a decade, it is impossible to predict when it will next release or how much water will be released. Concerned individuals should remain alert for statements issued by the National Weather Service for the earliest possible indication of a change in status of Suicide Basin. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0850: Cloudy, very top of Mt. Most of Southeast Alaska recorded near or above normal May precipitation values, continuing the upward trend of accumulated rainfall since mid-April. Even with the above normal precipitation values, total accumulations for the year-to-date still remain below normal. The southern Panhandle is still listed as abnormally dry in the United States Drought Monitor. While May is typically one of the drier months of the year, a few weather patterns atypical for this time of year brought heavier rainfall. Two notable atmospheric river events during the first part of May impacted the northern zones, while heavier showers associated with Gulf low pressure systems spread across the Panhandle in the latter part of May. Several stations recorded top ten wettest values for May, including Yakutat which received near record amounts of precipitation. Multiple daily precipitations were broken on six separate days. Temperatures also trended warmer than normal. This was mainly due to minimum temperatures being above normal, rather than daytime maximums which were near normal on average. The exception was Sitka which saw below normal maximum temperatures. The southern zones, including Ketchikan, experienced warmer than normal temperatures May 5-19 during which time dry conditions persisted. A shift in the weather pattern there dropped max temperatures below normal May 20- 30 along with the increased rainfall. A few record high temperatures were set on May 9th and May 18th. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri. 6/01/18: 1701: Pollen is blowing on the mainland | Forest Service fighting 56-acre fire at Berners Bay - KTOO 2020 ADT: Very, very light sprinkles, cloudy.
