A Glacier-Dammed Lake Outburst... Around Mendenhall River in the Central Inner Channels... * Until 1000 AM AKDT Friday * At 736 AM AKDT, river gauge reports indicate rises due to a glacier-dammed lake outburst flood on the Mendenhall River is on going. The added water from the glacier-dammed lake into the river system will result in continued river rises * For the Mendenhall River: At 736 AM AKDT the stage was 8.99 feet. Flood stage is 9 feet. Forecast: Crest near 11.9 feet around 10 PM AKDT Thursday. Inherent uncertainty in initial glacial lake volume will result in varying crest height and timing. Impacts: At 9.1 feet, waters covers Skaters Cabin Road between Skaters Cabin Road and the West Glacier Trailhead. Water will also flow into the Mendenhall Lake Campground. At 10.9 feet, View Drive will be impassable and there will be significant flooding to some homes in the area. Please stay tuned to NOAA weather radio or your favorite local weather news source for updates on this situation. The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia and lower the time required to cause hypothermia. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you can do so safely. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. && LAT...LON 5839 13451 5835 13458 5835 13463 5843 13462 5843 13455 $$ DEL --------------------------------------------------------------------- 0730: The Sun is breaking through (briefly). 0720: Cloudy, some extremely tiny breaks to breaks, some brighter spots and areas in the clouds, most of the mainland is hidden by clouds above about 300' - 400'. 0720: A Bald Eagle is squealing. 0705: Cloudy, some extremely tiny to slight breaks, much of the mainland hidden by fog/clouds above about 300' - 350'. 0700: .06" of Rainfall so far today. 0650: Light Sprinkling, Cloudy, lower bands, ribbons, clouds, bits, and wisps, thin layer of fog directly over part of the Channel. 0638: Light Sprinkling, Cloudy, lower bands, ribbons, clouds, bits, and wisps. 0605: Very Light Rain, Cloudy with high overcast, lower bands, ribbons, very small clouds and wisps and a layer of fog directly over Gastineau Channel. .05" of Rainfall so far today. 0517: 1st noticed a cruise ship foghorn sounding. Temperatures will rise into the 70s to lower 80s, with the warmest day expected to be Wednesday with few sites approaching record highs. Relative humidities will also be lowering so expect continued drying of fine fuels, such as grasses. Therefore, please be mindful of the potential for sparks from holiday celebrations and fire pits to touch off unintended fires. The warming temperatures and rising freezing levels will result in increased snow and ice melt with rises expected for the Taiya, Chilkat, Salmon, Alsek, Mendenhall and Stikine River basins. No flooding is expected at this time, but residents and visitors who recreate along these rivers should remain alert for the possibility of changing conditions and watch for updates over the next few days. Clouds and moisture will return to the area by the end of the week. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1250: Clear, a few very, very thin - very thin clouds. 1248: M/V Columbia sailings for July 6, 2018 through July 12, 2018 are canceled due to an ongoing mechanical issue with the bow thruster engine exhaust system. The Columbia needs significant repairs which will require the manufacturing of new bow thruster exhaust system components. The Columbia will be moved from AMHS' Bellingham ferry terminal to Bellingham's Fairhaven Shipyard because shipyard support is needed and the M/V Kennecott needs to dock at the ferry terminal on July 7, 2018. After an overly wet May, June of 2018 provided some honest summer weather for Southeast Alaska. With the exception of a few days here and there for the first half of the month, most places saw near or even slightly above normal daytime highs. The exception was the southern Panhandle, where daytime highs trended below normal for the first two weeks. Around mid month, a ridge of high pressure built in from the south and brought with it very warm air. Temperatures over the southern Panhandle rose above normal beginning on the 14th of June and by the 18th of the month, overnight lows were remaining at or above the normal daytime high values. The warm air arrived over the central inner channels a few days later. By the 18th of June it became downright hot with a high for the day of 85 degrees in Juneau. This tied the old record which was set back in 2004, a summer remembered by many as one of the best in many, many years. The central outer coast and northeast Gulf coast also experienced warmer than normal daytime highs around this time and it was generally the warmest part of the month for all of Southeast Alaska. By the beginning of the last week of June, temperatures cooled back down to more normal values. The excessive precipitation experienced in May looked as if it was going to continue in June and by the end of the first week, some locations were already as much as 2.5 inches above normal for accumulated rainfall. After the first week, rainfall diminished and the only meaningful accumulations for the second half of the month did not occur until the end of the month. Most locations finished the month with near normal accumulated precipitation. The exception was the northeast Gulf coast. Once again, Yakutat recorded a precip deficit for the month with a shortage of more than an inch. And this in spite of an atmospheric river event that produced 2.2 inches on the 16th of the month and another 0.73 inches on the 17th. Those two days accounted for more than half of the total monthly precipitation recorded at the Yakutat airport. -------------------------------------------------------------------- SUNDAY 7/01/18: 1904: Noticed a few Fireweed blossoms have opened | NWS: Warm and dry weather on the way for midweek and including the July 4th holiday - See 0644 Below | The Fireworks are at midnight July 3rd - 4th night, Juneau Harbor (Gastineau Channel) 2020 ADT: Cloudy, a few to some very slight to small breaks. .03" of Rainfall to this point today. 1950: Cloudy, some very slight to small breaks in the SE part of the sky, clouds skimming one of the high parts of Mt.
