The cold and snowy Winter weather of late November did not last long into December this year. By the third of the month, daytime highs and overnight lows were already above normal and getting warmer. Daily high temperature records were set on most days in many places through the 14th of the month. During this time, Southeast Alaska received nearly of its monthly precipitation as well and virtually all of it as rain rather than snow except for the highways. The second half of the month was cold and dry as a result of another strong and stationary high pressure system that set up over western Canada. Strong outflow winds dominated the weather, particularly across the far northern inner channels. By the 18th of the month, daily highs and lows were below normal and falling...and falling...and falling. Temperature continued to trend downward until the last day of the month. No low temperature records were set at the 4 primary climate sites, but several locations reported record low temperatures on the 28th, the 29th, and the 30th of the month. On New Year's Eve, a strong weather front and a significantly warmer low level air mass pushed in from the west. Snow began falling early in the evening along the outer coast and had pushed across the Panhandle early in the night. But the new snow was too little too late to make any significant difference to the monthly snow totals across the Panhandle. This was especially so in the Capital City, which recorded its second lowest December snow total on record. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mon. 1/01/18: New Year's Day! - Federal, State, & Local Holiday | 1154: NWS: Winter Weather Advisory will Expire at Noon AST today - See 1154 Below | 0856: NWS: Winter Weather Advisory in effect until Noon AST today...
