- “Alaska’s a great place to be because we have lots
of remote places where government presence
is really minimal,” Wheeler Creek cabin owner
Steve Gilbertson told the Assembly. He was
also Juneau’s municipal lands manager in
the 1990s. “I don’t believe every square
inch of Alaska has to be part of a borough
and the benefits and services would be minimal
or non-existent.” I totally agree; as a matter
of fact under CBJ governance they would have
the "honor" of paying taxes with
all the wonderful "benefits" of
bureaucratic burdens and governmental bossiness.

operating parameters, the M/V Tustumena schedule is modified for January 24th to 27th,

from Bellingham. AMHS has suspended reservation

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS - UPDATED
-----------------------------
Actions to protect human life and property will
vary within tsunami advisory areas.
If you are in a tsunami advisory area;
* Move out of the water, off the beach, and away from
harbors, marinas, breakwaters, bays and inlets.
* Be alert to and follow instructions from your local
emergency officials because they may have more detailed or
specific information for your location.
* If you feel a strong earthquake or extended ground rolling
take immediate protective actions such as moving inland
and/or uphill preferably by foot.
* Boat operators,
* Where time and conditions permit, move your boat out to
sea to a depth of at least 180 feet.
* If at sea avoid entering shallow water, harbors,
marinas, bays, and inlets to avoid floating and
submerged debris and strong currents.
* Do not go to the shore to observe the tsunami.
* Do not return to the coast until local emergency officials
indicate it is safe to do so.
IMPACTS
-------
Impacts will vary at different locations in the advisory
areas.
If you are in a tsunami advisory area;
* A tsunami with strong waves and currents is possible.
* Waves and currents can drown or injure people who are
in the water.
* Currents at beaches and in harbors, marinas,
bays, and inlets may be especially dangerous.
* Some impacts may continue for many hours to days after
arrival of the first wave.
* The first wave may not be the largest so later waves may
be larger.
* Each wave may last 5 to 45 minutes as a wave encroaches
and recedes.
* Coasts facing all directions are threatened because the
waves can wrap around islands and headlands and into bays.
* Strong shaking or rolling of the ground indicates an
earthquake has occurred and a tsunami may be imminent.
* A rapidly receding or receded shoreline, unusual waves and
sounds, and strong currents are signs of a tsunami.
* The tsunami may appear as water moving rapidly out to sea,
a gentle rising tide like flood with no breaking wave,
as a series of breaking waves, or a frothy wall of water.

If you are in a tsunami warning area;
* Evacuate inland or to higher ground above and beyond
designated tsunami hazard zones or move to an upper floor
of a multi-story building depending on your situation.

indicate it is safe to do so.
If you are in a tsunami watch area;
* Prepare to take action and stay alert for further
information.
IMPACTS
-------
Impacts will vary at different locations in the warning
areas.
If you are in a tsunami warning area;
* A tsunami with damaging waves and powerful currents is
possible.
* Repeated coastal flooding is possible as waves arrive
onshore, move inland, and drain back into the ocean.
* Strong and unusual waves, currents and inland flooding
can drown or injure people and weaken or destroy structures
on land and in water.
* Water filled with floating or submerged debris that can
injure or kill people and weaken or destroy buildings and
bridges is possible.
* Strong and unusual currents and waves in harbors,
marinas, bays, and inlets may be especially
destructive.
* Some impacts may continue for many hours to days after
arrival of the first wave.

- The tunnel was never opened to the public. The tunnel
required another $40,000 (I think that was
the figure) for lighting, concrete floor,
gates, and if I recall correctly, more rock
removal. If not, or in addition, it may have
been a concrete lining that was part of the
$40,000 cost with maybe some rock work involved
in that because of the lining. In a Southeast
Alaska Empire story of Aug. 31, 1976, the
tunneling work began on Aug. 30, 1976 by
James A. Hamilton, Inc. of Anchorage. From
the article: "City public works director
Art Morrison said the city's investment in
the tunnel is approximately $35,000. The
city, however, will have to appropriate further
funds for lighting the tunnel."
The Assembly debated the additional expenditure
to make the tunnel usable for pedestrians,
but in the end did not approve it. At a later
date the Assembly appropriated $7,000 for
efforts to secure the tunnel from entry;
a discussion over that seemingly high price
that Assemblyman Harry Aase said at the time
that they took more time debating than expenditures
many times that.
In the 2005 design competition for a new
Capitol Building, one of the proposals (by
Thom Mayne's Morphosis) showed using an enlarged
tunnel as one of the ways to access the building
by using an elevator from the mid-point of
the tunnel.

- NWS Summary of December 2017 Weather in Southeast
Alaska:
...December 2017 was warm and wet, and then cold and dry...
The cold and snowy Winter weather of late November did not last long
into December this year. By the third of the month, daytime highs
and overnight lows were already above normal and getting warmer.
Daily high temperature records were set on most days in many places
through the 14th of the month. During this time, Southeast Alaska
received nearly of its monthly precipitation as well and virtually
all of it as rain rather than snow except for the highways. The
second half of the month was cold and dry as a result of another
strong and stationary high pressure system that set up over western
Canada. Strong outflow winds dominated the weather, particularly
across the far northern inner channels. By the 18th of the month,
daily highs and lows were below normal and falling...and
falling...and falling. Temperature continued to trend downward until
the last day of the month. No low temperature records were set at
the 4 primary climate sites, but several locations reported record
low temperatures on the 28th, the 29th, and the 30th of the month.
On New Year's Eve, a strong weather front and a significantly warmer
low level air mass pushed in from the west. Snow began falling early
in the evening along the outer coast and had pushed across the
Panhandle early in the night. But the new snow was too little too
late to make any significant difference to the monthly snow totals
across the Panhandle. This was especially so in the Capital City,
which recorded its second lowest December snow total on record.
