A considerable front will affect the Panhandle Monday. Winds, Seas, snowfall amounts, and blowing snow will all be impactful. Expect winds to increase through the day Monday with storm force winds in the eastern Gulf waters and Cross Sound late Monday morning and early Monday afternoon. Strong gales associated with the front will also be present over the rest of the Gulf waters and spanning the inner channels from Cross Sound through and including Lynn Canal. Seas will build over the Gulf considerably into Tuesday afternoon with 20 to 30 ft seas expected over the gulf waters before they begin to subside Tuesday evening. Land winds will be gusty as the front approaches and with potential strong southeast winds for the majority of the Panhandle. Westerly winds will also be enhanced through the Icy Strait corridor. Land winds will slowly diminish tomorrow night behind the front. Currently snowfall totals for all of Monday range from less than 1 inch south of Sumner Strait to 4 to 8 inches near Yakutat, Pelican, Haines, Skagway, and Juneau. As the front comes ashore with snowfall coupled with stronger winds will create conditions that are favorable for blowing snow, specifically over the northern Panhandle. Primary impacts with this system will be: difficult marine travel, significantly reduced visibilities during periods of heavy snow, and difficult land and aviation travel during heavier periods of snow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 0700: 7/16" of Snowfall of a sandy consistency fell overnight between 2020 and Midnight on Feb. 24th. 0650: Cloudy/Mostly Cloudy, some snow blowing off Mt. A warm moist frontal band will move east over the Gulf of Alaska and bring mainly rain to the Southeast Alaska panhandle Monday through Tuesday. Much of Southeast Alaska is reporting snow on the ground, and as rain falls over snowy or ice-covered surfaces, very slick conditions will likely develop. Expected breezy conditions in some areas during much of the period may hinder pedestrians walking across snowy or icy surfaces. Precipitation is expected to start in Yakutat by early Monday morning and will spread to the rest of the Panhandle through Monday night before exiting the Panhandle to the east on Tuesday. Heaviest precipitation rates will be Monday afternoon for Yakutat and Monday night for other areas. Temperatures will warm steadily with this front, thus the primary precipitation type will be rain, but we can not rule out at least a mix with snow at the beginning of the event on Monday with light snow accumulations possible. Early estimates of rainfall are 1 to 3 inches between Monday and Tuesday. However, rivers and streams are reporting low water levels so the threat of flooding is low. Both rising snow levels in the mountains and snow melt due to warming will increase the amount of runoff to drainage areas and streams. Clearing storm drains before the storm arrives will help rid streets of excess water and minimize impacts. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1450: Clear, some clouds very far to the SE, Sun shining only on the mainland now. 1415: Clear, some clouds very far to the SE, Sun has been lost for most of West Juneau again. 1346: Clear /Mostly Clear with the clouds far - very far to the ESE, Sun shining on the mainland and a bit more in West Juneau than at 1315. 1315: Mostly Clear, Sun has been lost for most of West Juneau. 1256: Mostly Cloudy with very thin to thinnish clouds, somewhat weakened sunshine. Rivers and streams are reporting lower water levels and the threat flooding is low, however snow melt will increase the amount of runoff to drainage areas and streams. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri. 2/09/18: 2020 AST: Clear. 1950: Clear. 1850: Clear. 1750: Clear. 1650: Clear, the Sunset was at 1641. 1550: Clear, Sun shining on the mainland except for its lowest to lower part. 1450: Clear, Sun shining only on the mainland now. 1350: Clear, Sun has been mostly lost in West Juneau. 1250: Clear. 1150: Clear. 1050: Clear. 0950: Clear. 0850: Clear. 0750: Clear. 0650: Clear. 0620 AST: Clear. JANUARY OF 2018 WAS PARTICULARLY NOTEWORTHY FOR SOME DRAMATIC TEMPERATURE SWINGS. MOST LOCATIONS WENT FROM BEING WELL BELOW NORMAL TO HAVING RECORD WARMTH IN A MATTER OF ONLY 4 DAYS AROUND THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH. DURING THIS TIME, PARTS OF SOUTHEAST ALASKA WERE WARMER THAN KEY WEST FLORIDA. NUMEROUS SITES POSTED DAILY HIGHS IN THE LOW 60S. THE TEMPERATURE AT ANNETTE ISLAND ROSE TO 66 DEGREES ON THE 14TH OF THE MONTH, AND METLAKATLA ACHIEVED THE SAME TEMPERATURE THE FOLLOWING DAY. THE 67 DEGREES RECORDED AT THE KETCHIKAN TIDE GAUGE ON THE 14TH OF THE MONTH SET AN ALL-TIME RECORD HIGH FOR THE STATE OF ALASKA FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY. ANOTHER INTERESTING FACT ABOUT THESE EXTRORDINARY TEMPERATURES IS THAT, ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, THE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE OCCURRED IN THE LATE EVENING OR DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. IN ALL, 39 RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES WERE RECORDED ACROSS THE PANHANDLE BETWEEN THE 14TH AND THE 18TH OF THE MONTH. THE MONTH BEGAN WITH A SIGNIFICANT NEW YEAR`S DAY SNOW EVENT FOR MANY LOCATIONS, WITH HEAVY RAIN PREDOMINANTLY TO THE SOUTH. THE FOLLOWING DAY, SIGNIFICANTLY WARMER AIR SPREAD NORTH, RESULTING IN HEAVY RAIN OVER MUCH OF THE NEWLY FALLEN SNOW. TEMPERATURES THEN FELL WELL BELOW NORMAL AT THE START OF THE SECOND WEEK. A SECOND SIGNIFICANT SNOW EVENT OCCURRED IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO THE RECORD WARMTH THAT OCCURRED THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH. ONCE AGAIN, WARM POST-FRONTAL AIR AND CONTINUING PRECIPITATION WITH THIS SYSTEM IN THE FORM OF RAIN ASSISTED IN MELTING NEW SNOW. BY THE THIRD WEEK OF JANUARY, TEMPERATURES BEGAN TO TREND DOWNWARD AS A RESULT OF HIGH PRESSURE OVER WESTERN CANADA AND LOWER PRESSURES OVER THE GULF OF ALASKA, LEADING TO STRONG NORTHERLY OUTFLOW WINDS. HIGH WINDS OCCURRED IN DOWNTOWN JUNEAU AND SKAGWAY WITH STORM FORCE WINDS AND FREEZING SPRAY OVER LYNN CANAL. THIS PATTERN CONTINUED TO DELIVER RELATIVELY DRY, COLD, AND WINDY CONDITIONS ACROSS MUCH OF THE PANHANDLE INTO THE FOURTH AND FINAL WEEK OF THE MONTH. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Tue. 2/06/18: 2043: NWS: Winter Weather Advisory now in effect for freezing drizzle and light freezing rain until 6 AM AST Wednesday - See 2043 Below | NWS: Strong Winds across the northern Panhandle Wednesday evening into Thursday night - See 0452 Below | I'm late in posting this (for all my visitors who don't live in Juneau): Impossibly large bird spotted in Mendenhall Valley - Juneau Empire | How Mazda's Compression-Ignition Gas Engine Runs Like a Diesel Without Blowing Up & Skyactiv-3 -Thermal efficiency to roughly 56 percent; and 2019 Jeep Wrangler Pickup - Road & Track | Mazda's next-generation Skyactiv-X Gasoline Engine - Mazda ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2043 AST: NWS: Winter Weather Advisory now in effect for freezing drizzle and light freezing rain until 6 AM AST Wednesday.
