Summer continued in earnest for July of 2018 all across the Panhandle with the monthly average temperature departure ranging from 2 degrees to nearly 6 degrees above normal. From a climate perspective, that is A LOT. Numerous sites across Southeast Alaska recorded a top 10 month for average temperature and Juneau recorded the warmest July on record. Above normal conditions occurred during the first week of the month with some really fine weather - clear and dry - for 4th of July celebrations. Central inner channels and southern locations saw a return to decidedly warmer than normal conditions towards the end of the third week of the month with the warmth lasting through the end of July. Record warm daytime highs were set in both Juneau and Ketchikan during this time. The month was also drier than normal. The second week of July usually marks a distinct return to more rainy conditions to Southeast Alaska and this year was no exception. Most locations saw meaningful rain return by the 10th of July. However, by the 16th of the month, things dried out once again and relatively little rain accumulated during the second half of the month. Instead, sunny and hot conditions prevailed. Total precipitation deficits ranged from 12 percent below normal along the northeast Gulf coast to 82 percent below normal for the southern Panhandle. The warmer than normal conditions produced excessive snow and ice melt at higher elevations which contributed to at least two glacially dammed lake releases. Lakes feeding into the Taku River released at least once during the month, but water levels were low enough at the start of the event that no flooding occurred. Suicide Basin near Juneau released into Mendenhall Lake on the 19th of July and caused some flooding along the Mendenhall River. Initial concerns were that this flooding would turn into a record event based on the estimated water amount in the basin. The actual crest was 10.92 feet, a bit more than a foot less than the record of 11.99 feet set in 2016. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri. 8/03/18: AMHS has shifted the M/V Lituya's port calls on August 3-4, 2018 in response to high wind warnings - See 1128 Below 2020 ADT: Cloudy; precipitation in the inner Gold Creek valley? .13" of Rainfall so far today. 1950: Cloudy. 1850: Very, very light sprinkles, cloudy, small cloud Channel side of the top of Mt.
