Light snow will spread across portions of the northern and north- central Panhandle on Thanksgiving Day and increase Thursday night as a front moves ashore. Snow accumulations are expected to measure around 2 inches on Thanksgiving Day. But there is greater uncertainty for Thursday night. Currently we think that warming temperatures Thursday night will make snowfall wetter toward morning and hold down accumulations to around 3 inches. The Malaspina went in for its annual overhaul and certification on October 1, 2017 and was scheduled to return to service on December 22, 2017. During the overhaul, engineers determined that extensive steel replacement was needed and that both propeller hubs must be repaired. Because shipyard space is limited and propeller hubs will take several months to complete, the vessel is now scheduled to return to service in late spring. From December 22, 2017 to February 23, 2018, the Columbia and LeConte will cover for the Malaspina. Most Southeast Alaska communities will receive winter ferry service once a week and service to Prince Rupert is canceled. At the end of February 2018, the Kennicott will return to service to cover for the Malaspina and full ferry service to Southeast Alaska and Prince Rupert will resume. Affected passengers are already being notified by AMHS staff. "We know this is a big impact to communities who rely on ferries for passenger travel and cargo shipments. We rescheduled service to maximize port calls with available vessels and to offer communities full service for spring events like Gold Medal," said Captain John Falvey, Alaska Marine Highway General Manager. "We're disappointed and trying to make the best of it for passengers." For passenger information, please call a local terminal or the AMHS central reservations office at 1-907-465-3941 or toll free at 1-800-642-0066. An updated schedule will be made available online at FerryAlaska.com. Service notices may be found at dot.alaska.gov/amhs/service_notices.shtml or by contacting a local terminal at 1-907-465-3941 or toll-free at 1-800-642-0066. 1050: Cloudy, a few lower wisps. 1020: Cloudy, a few lower wisps. 0945: Cloudy, snowing in the inner Gold Creek valley which is partially obscured, very light snow in Last Chance Basin. 0920: Cloudy, snowing over some of the mainland. 0850: Cloudy, clouds barely skimming high points of Mt. A low pressure system moving into the Northeast Gulf of Alaska looks to move snow into portions of Southeast Alaska as early as Thursday night or Friday. However, uncertainty regarding amounts and areal extent of snow is still relatively high. The best chance of precipitation lies along the coast and the southern and south- central Panhandle; however, this is also a region that may experience a changeover to rain and would therefore keep amounts low. This includes Ketchikan, Sitka, Petersburg, and Wrangell. On the contrary, confidence is lower for precipitation across the northern and north-central Panhandle including Juneau and Haines. While no changeover to rain is expected for this region, amounts are also expected to be low. Nevertheless, a heavier band of snow with more impactful amounts may set up somewhere in the central Panhandle, but it is too early to speculate where. As confidence rises, forecasts will provide more specifics. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1450: Cloudy, some breaks - many of them filtered - heavily filtered, areas of extremely weak to very weak sunshine on the mainland. 1420: Cloudy with thin to thinnish and somewhat thicker clouds and a few breaks, filtered breaks, and hints of blue, extremely weak to weak sunshine on some of the mainland. 1350: Cloudy, some breaks and filtered blue, fairly bright. 1320: Cloudy with breaks and filtered breaks. 1250: Mostly Cloudy, extremely weak to weakened sunshine on the mainland. 1145: Partly Cloudy, light wind with an occasional gust, somewhat weakened - weakened sunshine. --------------------------------------------------------------- 1138: NWS: High Wind Warning will Expire at Noon AST today. A storm force low will enter the eastern Gulf of Alaska tonight with peak winds occurring over the coastal marine zones late Monday afternoon. As marine winds over the Gulf begin to diminish, winds over the inner channels will still be increasing through Monday evening. Wide spread gales will impact the inner channels through Monday night with storm force northerlies over northern Lynn Canal lasting through most of the night. Marine winds on the inside and outside are forecast to slowly diminish from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning. The exception will be northern Lynn Canal, where gale force northerly winds persist through Wednesday night. Strong winds with gusts between 40 and 50 mph are also forecast for numerous land areas across the Panhandle. Expect winds to increase first along the southern half of the outer coast and south of Frederick Sound on the inside Monday afternoon, then expand north through Tuesday afternoon. Cold surface air temperatures will result in the first snowfall of the season for much of the Panhandle. Most likely areas for accumulating snow near sea level will be between Icy Strait and Frederick Sound on Monday night. Visibilities will be reduced in blowing snow. All modes of travel will be adversely impacted by this wind event. Moored vessels and aircraft tied down outdoors will be particularly vulnerable. Additionally, loose objects will be blown around by strong, gusty winds. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1400: Cloudy/Mostly Cloudy with very, very thin to thin and thinnish clouds, very weak - weak sunshine on the mainland. 1335: Cloudy/Mostly Cloudy with very, very thin to thin and thinnish clouds over the sky, somewhat weakened sunshine on the mainland. 1250: Mostly Cloudy with very, very thin to thin and thinnish clouds over most of the sky, weakened - weak sunshine on the mainland. 1155: Very, very thin to thin and thinnish clouds over most of the sky, very slightly - slightly weakened sunshine. 1120: Very, very thin to thin and thinnish clouds over most of the sky, very slightly - slightly weakened sunshine. 1050: Partly Cloudy with very, very thin to thin clouds, very slightly weakened sunshine. 1020: Mostly Clear with very, very thin to very thin clouds. 0955: Clear with some very, very thin - very thin clouds. 0850: Clear with a small bit of very, very thin - very thin clouds 0835: Clear with a small bit of very, very thin - very thin clouds, Sun shining. 0750: Clear. 0650: Clear. 0620: Clear.
