Disruption to aviation and marine operations is likely later this week especially from Thursday onward. Strengthening high pressure over the Alaska Interior and the Yukon will increase northerly winds over the panhandle Wednesday and persist into the weekend. At this time, strongest winds are expected Thursday through Saturday. With the expected weather pattern, there is the potential for a strong multi day Taku wind event for downtown Juneau and Douglas. Along with strong winds, cold air will be ushered into the area with a prolonged period of below freezing temperatures for the central and northern panhandle. The cold temperatures combined with strong winds will increase the threat of freezing spray in the inner channels. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Mon. 1/30/17: NWS: Strong Northerly Outflow Event to develop later this week - See 0354 Below 2020 AST: Clear. Amen. Actually it should be the President with Congress ending all U.S. Government funding of "Public Radio & TV" and locally the State of Alaska should also end its share. KTOO - Juneau as an example is left-wing radio and TV at its finest. Government shouldn't be in the business of funding any group's free speech at taxpayer-debt payer expense whether it is one side, the other side, or both fairly represented. Conservative talk radio whatever you think about it is funded solely by the free market. In the age of the Internet especially, there is no legitimate justification for government funding. Clouds increase over the Panhandle Wednesday. A light amount of accumulating snow will fall at sea level late Wednesday and into Thursday over the central and northern Panhandle. Strengthening southerly winds will bring milder temperatures and transition snow to rain from south to north Thursday into Friday. A stronger weather system will approach the Panhandle from the southwest Friday and into the weekend with moderate to heavy precipitation. Temperatures will have moderated enough over a large portion of the area for this to fall mainly as rain. Temperatures will be cold enough across the far northern Panhandle and Hyder for precipitation to remain mostly as snow. Some travel impact is possible as rain falls on the existing snow and ice pack causing slippery conditions. Significant accumulations are possible especially along the Klondike and Haines highways Saturday. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Tue. 1/10/17: NWS: Warm and Wetter Weather later this week - See 1555 Below | NWS: NOAA Weather Radio will be off the air for two hours or less between 2 PM and 4 PM on Wednesday January 11 - See 1420 Below | Windstorm damage widespread, but minor, after Taku weekend - Juneau Empire 2020 AST: Mostly Clear. 1950: Partly Cloudy/Mostly Clear with the clouds in the SE part of the sky. 1850: Mostly Clear with clouds in the E-ESE part of the sky. 1820: Clear with clouds far to the E. 1750: Clear 1735: Clear, clouds very far to the NE. 1650: Clear. 1620: Clear. 1556: The Moon is starting to rise over the left shoulder of Mt. Confidence in a widespread fog event is decreasing as cold surface temperatures combined with light dry northeasterly flow is preventing fog formation in many locations. However, with the strong inversion in place there still will be some fog development across the area. Wind sheltered areas and locations with snowpack remain the most favored to experience dense fog. Ketchikan...Metlakatla...Hyder 406 AM AKST Mon Jan 2 2017 ...EARLY WEEK FOG EPISODE FOLLOWED BY STRONG NORTHERLY OUTFLOW EVENT... Conditions will become favorable for the development of fog across portions of Southeast Alaska tonight through mid week. Winds through the inner channels will gradually decrease along with building high pressure aloft. Wind sheltered areas and locations with snowpack are most favored to experience potentially dense fog. Visibility could become poor at times and cause disruptions to aviation and marine travel. The fog threat will end on Wednesday as northerly winds begin to increase. A very strong northerly outflow event is becoming more likely Thursday and into the weekend. These winds are expected to usher very cold air into Southeast Alaska. Strong winds combined with cold temperatures will increase the risk of freezing spray in the inner channels. A period of accumulating snow is also possible across the southern half of the panhandle at the beginning of the outflow event on Thursday and Friday. Marine and aviation travel during this timeframe will likely be impacted by this event. Updates will be provided through the week on the expected active weather across the panhandle. ------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------- NWS Summary of December 2016 Weather in Southeast Alaska: ...VERY SNOWY AND COLD START TO DECEMBER... A cold air outbreak that began at the very end of November continued into December. The coldest air penetrated from Canada at the start of the second week when temperatures in the Mendenhall Valley fell below zero for the first time since March of 2014. Elsewhere, the very cold temperatures resulted in wind chill advisories along both highways and freezing spray over portions of the inner channels. Temperatures rebounded in the third week of the month to near normal or even above normal values. There was a slight cool down leading up to Christmas, but temperatures once again returned to near normal or slightly above normal for the last week of the month. Total accumulated precipitation for the month ranged from below normal for the northern and southern ends of the panhandle, to above normal for the central outer coast and central inner channels. Most of the precipitation that fell during the month occurred in the first half of the first week, and again during the third week of the month. The first two weeks of the month featured a major snow event that produced up to 32 inches of snow over a 48 hour period. In spite of the lower than normal total precipitation in the Yakutat area, snowfall totaling more than 10 inches in the first week of the month kept the monthly snowfall very close to a normal value. Precipitation toward the end of the month fell both as rain and snow in many locations, owing to the warmer than normal temperatures that occurred late in the month. -------------------------------------------------------------------- SUNDAY 1/01/17: New Year's Day - Happy New Year! | No service today by Capital Transit or Care-A-Van | 1537: NWS: Potential for prolonged Fog Event early this week - See 1537 Below | Wind Direction Vane appears to be Frozen at NNW | Global Warming Alarmist NY Times Discovers Cold Is 17 Times Deadlier - The New American 2020 AST: Clear or Mostly Clear. 1950: Clear SE half to 2/3rds of sky, Cloudy? for remainder. 1850: Mostly? Conditions are becoming more and more favorable for a prolonged, potentially dense, fog event Sunday night into mid week. Winds through the inner channels will gradually decrease along with an inversion of increasing temperatures aloft. The inversion looks strongest from Kake north to Yakutat and over the Gulf on Monday and confidence is greatest for areas of fog in these places. An increase in north wind on Wednesday will likely put an end to the fog event. Visibility could become poor at times and cause disruptions to aviation and marine travel. This situation will be monitored closely over the next few days. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1526: Clear/Mostly Clear, the Sun has set. 1506: Mostly Clear, orange glow on the very top of Mt.
