Cool air entrenched over the Panhandle will be favorable for precipitation to fall as snow with the next series of weather systems. A low developing over the northern Gulf of Alaska Monday night will impact the Panhandle through Tuesday with the first band of potential snowfall. The exact track of this first low is uncertain but currently expected to persist over northeastern Gulf and keep an onshore flow with snow continuing. Meanwhile a developing wave late Wednesday night should move into the southern half of the Panhandle bringing more significant snowfall and a potential change over to rain for Prince of Wales Island and the southern Inner Channels. Forecast confidence is high for periods of accumulating snow late Monday night, but low to moderate for periods beyond due to uncertainty with the timing and track of each system. Editor: Though I haven't seen the film, it seems to be missing water and water supply, wastewater, flood control, irrigation, power generation (other than solar) and transmission, airports, ports, docks, harbors, and more; all the "mundane" stuff we take for granted, will still be needed in the future, and that will require "big dreams", skill, innovation, imagination, and ingenuity. The most notable weather of January 2017 across Southeast Alaska was the wind. High wind warnings were issued for various portions of the Panhandle on six different occasions, with the first on the 5th of January and the last on the 27th of the month. In addition to these high wind events, there were numerous times where strong wind gusts of 40 mph or greater impacted the region. January temperatures once again trended above average, and this can be seen most clearly in a graph of accumulated heating degree days for the month. In looking more closely at the data, daily records indicate above normal from the 13th through about the 18th and again from the 23rd through the 28th. During these two periods, observed overnight lows were in many cases warmer than what normal daytime highs are for this time of the year. Very dry conditions prevailed through the 11th of the month. Precipitation returned on the 12th of the month across all of Southeast Alaska with accumulations rapidly rising towards normal by the 15th of January. Monthly precipitation accumulations trended above normal for the remainder of the month in Juneau and Sitka while hovering around normal for Yakutat. Annette Island accumulated precip. remained below normal for the entire month in spite of rain and snow received around the middle of the month and then again in the last week. The return of significant precip. to the Panhandle at the end of the second week of January did not parlay into meaningful snowfall, as this coincided with one of the warmer times of the month. In fact, of the three climate sites that report snowfall, only Yakutat came anywhere close to a climate-normal snow total for the month. Both Juneau and Annette Island rivaled 2016, the poorest January on record in terms of snowfall. Still there was significant snowfall in portions of southeast Alaska this past January. Winter weather warnings were issued on 5 separate occasions, for Haines, Skagway, and Misty Fjords. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Wed. 2/01/17: 1515: NWS: High Wind Watch in effect from 3 PM Thursday afternoon through 3 PM Saturday afternoon - See 1515 Below | NWS: Strong Northerly Outflow Event to develop Thursday - See 0517 Below | I'm fizzling out on the Weekly Picture... Disruption to aviation and marine operations is likely from Thursday through much of the weekend for much of Southeast Alaska. Strengthening high pressure over the Alaska Interior and the Yukon will increase northerly winds over the panhandle today and tonight and persist into the weekend. At this time, strongest winds are expected Thursday through Saturday. There is the potential for a strong multi-day Taku wind event with 60 to 80 mph gusts possible for downtown Juneau and Douglas, for which a high wind watch has been issued. Along with strong winds, cold air will be ushered into the area with a prolonged period of below freezing temperatures for the central and northern panhandle. The cold temperatures combined with strong winds will increase the threat of freezing spray in the inner channels. Dangerous wind chills will also likely accompany this event in the higher elevations including White Pass. Subzero wind chills will be likely at sea level in local areas of the northern interior Panhandle. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------------- 0417: NWS: High Wind Watch in effect from Thursday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.
