MWS Special Statement
Statement as of 4:51 AM AKDT on September 29, 2016
...Strong northerly winds to develop Thursday night into Saturday...
A period of strong northerly winds will develop Thursday night and
persist through Saturday morning. This will result in hazardous
marine and aviation conditions as well as the potential for power
outages and flying debris over land areas.
An unseasonably strong area of high pressure over the Yukon
combined with a surface low pressure system over the northeast
Pacific will lead to the development of strong northerly winds.
Highest winds are expected late Thursday night into Friday with
small craft to gale force winds in the northern and central Inner
Channels. The highest winds will be in locations exposed to the
north or near mountain passes with gusts to 40 to 50 mph. A high
wind watch has been issued for a Taku Wind event in downtown
Juneau and Douglas late Thursday night into Friday with gusts to
60 mph possible.
This statement will be the final statement on this event.
- 0450 ADT: NWS: High Wind Watch in effect Friday

WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY...
A POTENT WEATHER SYSTEM CURRENTLY OVER THE WEST CENTRAL GULF
WILL MOVE INTO THE EASTERN GULF WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND ACROSS THE
PANHANDLE THURSDAY. POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THIS SYSTEM INCLUDE
SIGNIFICANT DISRUPTION TO MARINE AND AVIATION OPERATIONS AS WELL
AS POWER OUTAGES.
THE WEATHER SYSTEM WILL GENERATE STORM FORCE WINDS OF 50 KT WITH
SEAS BUILDING TO BETWEEN 25 AND 30 FEET OVER THE NORTHERN GULF
WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON BEFORE SPREADING INTO THE EASTERN GULF LATE
WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND EARLY THURSDAY. HURRICANE FORCE WIND GUSTS OF
75 KT ARE POSSIBLE NEAR THE FAIRWEATHER GROUNDS TONIGHT. AS FOR
LAND AREAS, HEAVY RAIN AND GUSTY WINDS UP TO 50 MPH WILL AFFECT
YAKUTAT AND THE NORTHEAST GULF COAST WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
THURSDAY MORNING. WINDS ALONG THE OUTER COAST INCLUDING ELFIN
COVE...SITKA...AND PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND WILL INCREASE LATE
WEDNESDAY NIGHT PEAKING EARLY THURSDAY WITH GUSTS TO AROUND 45
MPH. WINDS WILL SPREAD INLAND OVER THE INNER CHANNELS WITH GUSTS
TO 40 MPH IN MOST LAND AREAS AND SMALL CRAFT TO GALE FORCE WINDS
THROUGHOUT THE INSIDE MARINE WATERS.
THIS SYSTEM WILL ALSO PRODUCE A PERIOD OF HEAVY RAIN AS IT PUSHES
INLAND. HEAVY RAIN WILL LINGER LONGEST OVER THE NORTHEAST GULF
COAST WHERE 3 TO 4 INCHES OF RAIN WILL FALL BETWEEN WEDNESDAY
AFTERNOON AND THURSDAY NIGHT. OVER THE REMAINDER OF THE
PANHANDLE 1 TO 2 INCHES OF RAIN WILL FALL WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH
THURSDAY NIGHT. RISES ARE EXPECTED ON STREAMS AND RIVERS BUT LOW
WATER LEVELS AT THIS TIME COMBINED WITH THE RELATIVELY QUICK
MOVING NATURE OF THIS STORM SYSTEM WILL KEEP THE FLOODING THREAT
LOW.

NWS Special Statement
Statement as of 5:00 PM AKDT on September 20, 2016
...Confidence increasing on details for significant storm system
Wednesday night into Thursday...
A potent weather system currently over the west central Gulf
will move into the eastern Gulf Wednesday night and across the
Panhandle Thursday. Potential impacts from this system include
significant disruption to marine and aviation operations as well
as power outages.
The weather system will generate storm force winds of 50 kt with
seas building to between 25 and 30 feet over the northern Gulf
Wednesday afternoon before spreading into the eastern Gulf late
Wednesday night and early Thursday. As for land areas, heavy rain
and gusty winds up to 50 mph will affect Yakutat and the northeast
Gulf Coast Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Winds
along the outer coast including Elfin Cove...Sitka...and Prince
of Wales Island will increase late Wednesday night peaking early
Thursday with gusts to around 45 mph. Winds will spread inland
over the Inner Channels with gusts to 40 mph in most land areas
and small craft to gale force winds throughout the inside marine
waters.
Rises are expected on streams and rivers but low
water levels at this time combined with the relatively quick
moving nature of this storm system will keep the flooding threat
low.
This statement will updated by 6 am akdt Wednesday or sooner if
conditions warrant.

NWS Special Statement
Statement as of 5:55 AM AKDT on September 20, 2016
...Strong wind and heavy rain to affect the Panhandle Wednesday
through Thursday...
A potent weather system will move into the central Gulf overnight
into Wednesday then move into the eastern Gulf Wednesday and
across the Panhandle Thursday.
A front with storm force winds and seas building to 25 feet will
move into the northern and eastern Gulf beginning early Wednesday.
However, there remains lower confidence in the timing, strength
and duration of heavy rainfall and wind as it moves across the
Panhandle on Thursday. At this time, highest winds and seas in
the Gulf are expected on Wednesday near Cape Suckling and
Wednesday night into Thursday in the northeast Gulf. As for land
areas, heavy rain and gusty winds will affect Yakutat and the
northeast Gulf Coast Wednesday through Thursday. The rest of the
Panhandle can expect gusty winds and rain from late Wednesday
night into Thursday evening depending on when the front moves
through.
At this time, potential impacts from this system include
significant disruption to marine and aviation operations. The
threat of flooding and power outages will continue to be monitored
as models come into better agreement on the evolution of this
robust system.

NWS Special Statement
Statement as of 4:46 PM AKDT on September 07, 2016
...Strong winds and heavy rain possible Thursday night and Friday...
A strong storm system is forecast to develop over the eastern Gulf
Thursday night and Friday. Heavy rain will spread inland ahead of
the low over the Panhandle. The rainfall...in the range of 2.5 to
near 5 inches through Saturday morning over the north central
Panhandle...will bring the smaller streams and rivers up rapidly
and some may reach bankfull levels. Flooding is not expected at
this time however the NWS will continue to monitor the situation.
In addition...gale force winds are expected over
Clarence...Sumner...and southern Chatham straits and Cross
Sound...while storm force westerlies and seas in excess of 20 feet
are possible for the central and eastern Gulf Friday afternoon and
evening. Strong wind gusts to 40 mph will also be possible for
southern Panhandle and outer coastal communities on Friday.
There is still some uncertainty in the exact track of the low
pressure system which will determine where the strongest winds
occur. This situation will continue to be monitored...and
additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

conditions warrant.
