Whittier Tunnel Remains Closed Until Further
Notice
(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, also
known as the Whittier Tunnel, remains closed
until further notice due to a rock fall hazard
inside the tunnel. The tunnel was closed
at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25.
A geologist with the Alaska Department of
Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF)
has inspected the tunnel and has recommended
the removal of loose rock and additional
stabilization of the remaining rock in the
area where the hazard exists. This will require
the installation of rock bolts and high tension
mesh. ADOT&PF has contracted with Advanced
Blasting to perform the required repairs.
The contractor will be on site early this
afternoon and begin stabilization work immediately.
Once stabilization work is complete, the
department will escort one-lane of traffic
through the tunnel, both in and out of Whittier.
The time for this escort is not yet set,
and is dependent on the completion of the
stabilization work.
The tunnel will remain closed to regular
traffic Wednesday, Oct. 26, and Thursday,
Oct. 27 to allow the contractor to complete
the work. We will provide more information
about a possible reopening as information
becomes available.

- NWS Statement posted Oct. 7th at 11:25 AM on
their Facebook page:
October is normally Southeast Alaska’s wettest
month of the year. Potent storm systems regularly
bring heavy rain and strong winds to the
Panhandle with little in the way of sun and
dry weather. Well, the first half of October
2016 is shaping up to be quite the opposite.
An abnormal weather pattern has set up over
Southeast Alaska allowing for ample sunshine
and little in the way of rainfall. Current
indications are the dry weather pattern will
persist through at least the middle of next
week. This will likely set records all across
the panhandle for the driest first half of
October on record. Stay tuned to weather.gov/Juneau, this Facebook page, and @NWSJuneau on Twitter for the latest
forecasts.

- NWS Summary of September 2016 Weather at the Juneau International Airport:
...WARMER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL ACROSS SOUTHEAST ALASKA...
SEPTEMBER OF 2016 WAS ANOTHER WARMER THAN NORMAL MONTH ACROSS THE
PANHANDLE, COURTESY OF A SIGNIFICANTLY WARMER THAN NORMAL GULF OF
ALASKA AND A PREVAILING STORM TRACK THAT CONSISTENTLY BROUGHT WARM,
MOIST AIR FROM MORE SOUTHERLY LATITUDES. SEVERAL RECORD HIGH
TEMPERATURES WERE REPORTED DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF THE MONTH BEFORE
DAYTIME HIGHS AND LOWS FELL MORE IN LINE WITH CLIMATOLOGICAL NORMALS
FOR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. APART FROM RECORD WARMTH AT THE BEGINNING
OF SEPTEMBER, THE WARMER THAN NORMAL AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURES WERE
LARGELY A RESULT OF WARMER THAN NORMAL OVERNIGHT LOWS. THIS HAS BEEN
OBSERVED FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW. SEPTEMBER ALSO SAW THE FIRST FREEZE
OF THE SEASON FOR SEVERAL LOCATIONS NEAR THE END OF THE MONTH AS A
RESULT OF CLEAR SKIES AND A COOL, DRY OFFSHORE AIRMASS ORIGINATING IN
CANADA, WITH SOME LOCATIONS SEEING RECORD COLD OVERNIGHT LOWS DURING
THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH.
THE PREVAILING STORM TRACK WHICH KEPT SOUTHEAST ALASKA WARMER THAN
NORMAL ALSO RESULTED IN A RECURRING ATMOSPHERIC RIVER OVER THE REGION
AND WETTER THAN NORMAL MONTH FOR MOST LOCATIONS. NOTABLY, YAKUTAT
REMAINED BELOW NORMAL FOR PRECIPITATION IN SEPTEMBER IN SPITE OF HEAVY
RAINS ON 11-12 SEPTEMBER AND AGAIN BETWEEN THE 20TH THROUGH THE 24TH.
SEVERAL LOCATIONS BROKE 1-DAY PRECIPITATION RECORDS BEGINNING THE
SECOND WEEK OF THE MONTH AS WELL AS THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH.
SIGNIFICANT WIND ACCOMPANIED THE HEAVY RAIN ON THE 12TH AND 13TH WITH
MANY AREAS EXPERIENCING VERY GUSTY CONDITIONS. AN OUTFLOW EVENT TOWARDS
THE END OF THE MONTH PRODUCED STRONG WIND GUSTS IN ADDITION TO CLEAR
SKIES AND DRY WEATHER.
