(1st issued?) NWS Freezing Rain Advisory will Expire at 6 AM AST early this morning. Statement as of 5:50 AM AKST on January 09, 2016 ...Freezing Rain Advisory will expire at 6 am akst early this morning... Temperatures have risen above freezing over much of the Juneau area early this morning...causing the freezing rain to become rain. They will remain above freezing through the day...and any localized areas still below freezing will warm above freezing through early morning. Up to one tenth of an inch of ice accumulated in some areas...so there may be localized icy patches early this morning before the ice completely melts...especially in the Mendenhall Valley. This will be the final statement on this event. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- *At 0411 the High Rain Rate Alarm sounded, .08" of Precipitation was recorded within 5 minutes causing a High Rain Rate of 13.09" of precipitation per hour. It was sprinkling/very light rain at the time and the only thing I can figure is that because of the warmer temperatures the Rain Collector finally thawed out and the melting frost and any freezing rain/pooled rain after 0230 - 0300 all released in a few minutes. How much is from the frost and how much from rain I don't know. Unfortunately I cleared out the .08" thinking all or most of it was from frost that had accumulated over the past several days. The NWS however recorded .06" - .07" at the Juneau Airport over the same period. The problem is my website is updated from two sources, the Davis VP2 Console and the WeatherLink database, which can cause conflicting data on the same page. The console is the problematic one because there is limited ability to modify bad data once it has been recorded, or to add missing data back in. In the case today, I don't know how much to attribute to frost versus rain and then how to have the proper data display without discrepancies. The High Rain Rate values have been corrected by substituting fixed values in place of the tags in the .htx template files until such time as they have been superseded. This isn't feasible for the ever changing rain values.
