NWS Special Statement Statement as of 8:38 PM AKDT on August 27, 2016 ...Mendenhall Lake at bankfull and rising this evening... As of 8 PM akdt...Mendenhall Lake is at bankfull with a water level of 8 feet and rising. The rise is due to another glacial dam release from Suicide Basin...the sixth of the season. Uncertainty remains in the initial Glacial Lake volume which leads to a lower confidence in forecasted crest height and time. The current forecasted crest is at 8.6 feet on Sunday morning. This may need to be adjusted slightly higher as lake levels have risen this evening at a faster rate than forecasted. However...significant flooding is still not expected. July 2016 featured above normal temperatures in Juneau once again. As has been the case in the past and as expected by current trends in climate change, the above normal values were more a result of warmer than normal overnight lows rather than daytime highs. One daily high temperature record was tied when, on the 18th of the month, the temperature reached 82 degrees. this tied the previous record from 1947. No record low temperatures were set and this is not surprising considering the overall trend in overnight lows being above normal. Large diurnal spreads were observed for the first three weeks of the month. Between the 21st and the 27th, however, very little variability was observed and this period of time corresponded to a somewhat rainy portion of the month. The month began with above normal precipitation, with nearly three quarters of an inch of rain in the first two days. Accumulated precipitation then trended well below normal, with less than a quarter inch of rain falling between the 2nd and the 20th. Beginning with the third week of the month, significant rainfall occurred for 9 days in a row and accounted for nearly 80 percent of the rain for the month. In spite of this wet ending to the month, Juneau finished July right around 7 percent below normal for accumulated precipitation. This stands in stark contrast to last year, which was the wettest July on record with 10.4 inches of rain recorded at the airport. The third week of the month was also quite windy relative to the rest of July. A peak wind of 30 mph with peaks gusts to 40 mph occurred on the 23rd of the month, the same day that the airport recorded an even 1.0 inches of rainfall.
