- "Glacier Bay was first surveyed in 1794 by a team
from the H.M.S. Discovery, captained by George
Vancouver. At that time, the survey showed
a mere indentation in the shoreline. The
massive glacier was more than 4,000 feet
thick in places, up to 20 miles wide, and
extended more than 100 miles to the St. Elias
mountain range. By 1879, however, naturalist
John Muir discovered that the ice had retreated
more than 30 miles forming an actual bay.
By 1916, the Grand Pacific Glacier – the
main glacier credited with carving the bay
– had melted back 60 miles to the head of
what is now Tarr Inlet." (Editor: The
glaciers have been melting for a very, very
long time contrary to what the Juneau Empire
and the current holder of the Presidency
think .... "Global Warming - Climate
Change Inc.: In Business for Over 200 Years!"
... Actually climate change has been going
on since the earth came into existence.)

...Moderate to heavy rain continuing for the southern and central
Panhandle through Saturday...
A stalled front continues to provide a focus for moderate to heavy
rain mainly over the southern Panhandle. Amounts of 2 to 4 inches
will fall in areas from Petersburg south. With strong winds
occurring today through the southern Inner Channels in addition to
heavy rainfall...mudslides are possible. Streams and rivers will
continue to rise across the southern Panhandle...but at this time
no flooding is expected.
Amounts across the Juneau area will be much lighter of between 1
and 2 inches. However...basins are much more saturated over the
north...and thus rivers and lakes may approach bankfull at times
through Saturday.

...Flood Watch in effect through late tonight for the Mendenhall
Lake and River...

After falling to 8.2 feet Thursday morning...the lake has risen

receding Friday morning. At 9 feet water will start to flow over

...Flood Watch remains in effect until late this evening for the
Mendenhall Lake and River...
The Flood Watch continues for

MV Columbia return to service is delayed further due
to mechanical issues associated with the
vessel’s exhaust system and propellers. Damage
to the vessel’s starboard propeller due to
a log strike was discovered while the ferry
was delayed in Ketchikan. This will require
the ferry to be dry docked for repairs. The
vessel is now scheduled to return to passenger
service August 31, 2015.
MV Malaspina has been rerouted to sail the Bellingham,
Wash. to Southeast Alaska schedule, effectively
replacing the MV Columbia through August 30. MV LeConte will sail a revised schedule in Northern
Southeast Alaska to accommodate passengers
affected by the MV Malaspina change in service off of the Northern Lynn
Canal dayboat run.
AMHS staff is contacting all affected passengers
who require rebooking or notification of
the revised schedules. The sailing schedule
is currently being revised and will be posted
online at FerryAlaska.com as quickly as possible. This significant scheduling
change has also delayed the release of the
2015-2016 Winter Schedule. The winter schedule
is now expected to be released next week.

Statement as of 8:17 PM AKDT on August 17, 2015
The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a
* Flood Advisory for...
the Mendenhall Lake and River...and small creeks and streams...
* Until 700 PM akdt Tuesday
* Heavy rain is forecast to occur late Monday night and persist
through Tuesday afternoon. Total rainfall amounts in excess of 2
inches will be possible during this event. As a result...minor
flooding for the Mendenhall Lake...river...and area creeks and
streams is expected by Tuesday morning.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause minor flooding for
the Mendenhall Lake and River...as well as Jordan and Montana creeks.
A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated. Ponding
of water in urban areas is occurring or is imminent. Do not attempt
to travel across flooded roads. Find alternate routes. It takes only
a few inches of swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.

- 1600: NWS: Heavy Rain Will Cause Rivers to Rise Significantly
by Tuesday.
NWS Special Statement
Statement as of 4:00 PM AKDT on August 16, 2015
...Heavy rain will cause rivers to rise significantly by Tuesday...
A weather front moving across the northeastern Gulf Coast to the
northern half of the Panhandle will bring occasional heavy rainfall
Monday through Tuesday morning. Local rivers and streams are
currently running low...therefore a significant amount of rainfall
is needed for the rivers and streams to rise to bankfull conditions
or minor flood stages. Most intense rain is expected over Monday
night. Storm total rainfall amounts will range from 4 to 6 inches
along the northeast Gulf Coast...southeast of Yakutat and west of
Cross Sound. Around 1 to 3 inches of rainfall are forecasted across
the northern half of the Panhandle. The heavy rainfall will likely
cause water levels to increase several feet for streams and rivers
in the area.
At this time...the National Weather Service is focusing on
forecasted rivers and streams across the northern and central
Panhandle. Chilkat River near Haines and Jordan Creek in Juneau are
forecasted to reach bankfull conditions by Tuesday morning. Taiya
River near Skagway...Mendenhall Lake and Montana Creek in Juneau are
predicted to reach minor flood stage by Tuesday morning. In addition
ungauged small streams over the area are excepted to rise
significantly.
Stay tuned to the National Weather Service for further updates on
this event. This statement will be updated by 7 am Monday morning or
sooner if conditions warrant.

...Glacier dam release has ended on the Mendenhall Lake...
The glacial dam release from Suicide Basin has ended and Mendenhall
Lake crested at 8.1 feet this afternoon. The lake is falling and is
expected to continue to fall rapidly through the evening. There
remains considerable uncertainty in the amount of water remaining in
Suicide Basin and if additional releases will happen in the near
future.
This will be the final statement on this event.

- 1238 (Posted here at 1605): NWS: Glacier Dam
Release on the Mendenhall Lake.
1238 PM akdt Thu Aug 13 2015
...Glacier dam release on the Mendenhall Lake...
Aerial surveys from local pilots as well as Mendenhall Lake gauge
readings suggest a glacial dam release has begun from Suicide
Basin. At this time...there is uncertainty whether the lake will
reach minor flood stage. Recent heavy rainfall has raised lake and
river levels to bankfull conditions. With the additional water
from Suicide Basin...the forecasted lake levels will approach
minor flood stage Friday afternoon. Please stay tuned to the
National Weather Service for additional information on this event.
This product will be updated by 4 PM this afternoon or sooner if
conditions warrant.
