NWS Flood Warning has been Cancelled Statement as of 11:50 PM AKDT on July 11, 2014 ...The Flood Warning has been cancelled for the Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River... After an all-time record crest of 11.9 feet on Mendenhall Lake and a near-record crest of 13.5 feet on the Mendenhall River...waters started falling sharply Friday evening...and by midnight Friday night waters have dropped below flood stage. The flood waters from this 2014 jökulhlaup exceeded both the 2011 and 2012 events. River waters...although receding...will still remain high and turbulent Friday night. Therefore...caution is urged along banks which may remain unstable due to over-saturation. Near time of crest...water was reported in spots along Meander Way as well as parts of View Drive. Alaska Electric Light and Power shut off power from View Drive as well as the Mendenhall Campground. In addition the city closed some adjacent streets to all but residents in case of possible evacuation. Down river...the lower sections experienced areas of bank erosion, and a logjam formed at the new Brotherhood Bridge construction site from accumulating debris. Water from Mendenhall Lake submerged Photo Point and reached the access bridge. Lake waters swelled into large areas of the Mendenhall Campground and flooded Skaters Cabin Road as well. This is the last statement for this event. NWS Areal Flood Warning Statement as of 10:41 AM AKDT on July 11, 2014 ...The Flood Warning remains in effect until 10 PM akdt Saturday for a glacial dammed lake outburst for the Mendenhall River and Lake... At 1015 am akdt...both the lake level and river continue to rise above moderate flood stage. The Mendenhall River stage at 10 am akdt on Friday was 12.5 feet. The Mendenhall Lake level was 10.4 feet also at 10 am. Maximum flood level for the Mendenhall River will be approximately 15 feet and is currently expected to occur around 4 PM Friday afternoon. The predicted maximum flood level for Mendenhall Lake is approximately 12 feet also around 4 PM Friday. Property owners along the Mendenhall River should be aware of the afternoon high tide of approximately 16 feet at 2 PM Friday afternoon. This will result in potentially significant backwater as the river approaches a crest later in the afternoon and increases the risk of bank erosion. Some debris such as branches have already been observed in the river flow. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. Precautionary/preparedness actions... If you live near or along the Mendenhall River stay alert and be prepared to take action. Expect inundation to occur in areas that have not previously flooded. Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges...dips...or low water crossings. Never try to cross a flowing stream...even a small one... on foot. If you encounter a flooded roadway...turn around...don't drown. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground. NWS Areal Flood Warning Statement as of 10:15 PM AKDT on July 10, 2014 ...The Flood Warning remains in effect until 10 PM akdt Saturday for a glacial dammed lake outburst for the Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River in Juneau... Based on strengthening evidence of faster rates of water release from the Glacier into the lake...the Mendenhall River and Mendenhall Lake are now projected to rise higher and more quickly than earlier forecasts with highest water levels possibly as soon as mid-Friday afternoon instead of Friday evening. At 915 PM akdt...the Mendenhall Lake level was 7.9 feet. The lake is now projected to rise another four feet or so in the next 18 hours to crest at approximately 12.0 feet around 4 PM Friday afternoon. The Mendenhall River level at 9 PM Thursday was 9.9 feet. The river is forecast to rise another 5 feet in the next 18 hours to crest at approximately 15.0 feet around 4 PM Friday afternoon. The predicted flood levels are around one foot above record flood levels on the Mendenhall River and Mendenhall Lake and around one foot above the highest water levels that occurred during the 2011 Glacier flood event. Based on the new forecasts...minor flooding will begin in the Mendenhall campground and along West Glacier Spur Road late Thursday night. In addition...yards and property of homes along view drive will begin inundation late Thursday night. Moderate flooding is forecast to begin early Friday morning with View Drive flooding and becoming impassable. In addition as much as 3 feet of water will cover low areas of the Mendenhall Campground and 1.5 feet of water covering the West Glacier Spur Road. Adjacent low-lying areas nearby the river that avoided flooding from the 2011 event are at risk for flooding from this event with higher water levels projected. Property owners along the lower Mendenhall River should be aware that there is a high tide of 15 feet at 1 PM Friday. Backwater from the high tide will make the river level higher than just from the flood alone. This will increase the risk of bank erosion all along the Mendenhall. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. People should take necessary precautions immediately. Repeating...the Mendenhall Lake level is now forecast to crest at 12.0 feet and the Mendenhall River is now forecast to crest at 15.0 feet around 4 PM Friday afternoon. The Forest service has closed the Mendenhall campground and plans to temporarily evacuate campers Thursday night. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. Precautionary/preparedness actions... NWS Areal Flood Warning Statement as of 5:29 PM AKDT on July 10, 2014 ...The Flood Warning remains in effect until 10 PM akdt Saturday for a glacial dammed lake outburst for the Mendenhall Lake and River in Juneau... At 525 PM akdt...the Mendenhall Lake level was 7.3 feet. The lake has risen about one foot so far today. The current forecast is for the lake to rise another five feet or so and crest at 11.7 feet Friday evening around 10 PM. The Mendenhall River level at 2 PM Thursday was 9.7 feet. The river is forecast to crest at 14.6 feet around 10 PM Friday. The predicted flood levels are about one half foot above record 1995 flood levels on the Mendenhall and about one foot above the highest water levels that occurred during the 2011 Glacier flood event. Property owners along the lower Mendenhall River should be aware that there is a high tide of 19 feet at 1 am Saturday. Backwater from the high tide will make the river level higher than just from the flood alone. This will increase the risk of bank erosion all along the Mendenhall. Because of the record high water levels predicted... expect more areas to flood than what occurred in 2011. In particular the neighborhood along Meander Way in the Valley and areas below Montana Creek and Brotherhood Bridge are at risk. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. People should take necessary precautions immediately. Repeating...the Mendenhall Lake level is forecast to crest at 11.7 feet around 10 PM Friday. When the USGS gauge on Mendenhall Lake reads 9 ft water will begin to cover West Glacier Spur Road near Skaters Cabin. At 10 feet parts of the Mendenhall Campground become inundated. The Forest service has closed the Mendenhall campground and plans to temporarily evacuate campers Friday. And the Mendenhall River level is forecast to crest at 14.6 feet around 10 PM Friday. When the river level reaches 13 feet View Drive will be flooded and impassable. When flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins to rise. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Areal Flood Watch Statement as of 9:53 PM AKDT on July 09, 2014 ...Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday morning... The Flood Watch continues for * The Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall river in Juneau * through Monday morning * The glacially dammed lake known as Suicide Lake in the Juneau ice field is showing signs of starting to drain according to sensors placed in the lake. Aircraft surveillance over the basin also indicated that a few bathtub rings were starting to appear which is another sign that the lake has begun to drain and a jökulhlaup has begun. This lake drains through the Glacier into the Mendenhall Lake and down the Mendenhall River. The Mendenhall Lake has shown signs of a slight rise Wednesday evening indicating the initial release of water is reaching the lake. The lake will likely slowly rise or remain steady Wednesday night and if the outburst follows the pattern of the last few events...the lake will begin to rise more noticeably starting Thursday or Friday. Peak water levels will occur approximately four days from the beginning of the release which would indicate sometime Sunday July 13. * Based on releases of recent years...the lake should rise 4 to 6 feet through the event. The rate of rise will depend on several factors including the actual volume of water stored in the lake within Suicide Basin and the rate at which the water releases from that basin. The rate of observed rise of Mendenhall Lake will help better determine these unknowns. Information on predicted water rises and timing will be shared as new observations and trends allow greater confidence in forecasts. At this time residents along the Mendenhall River and Lake should begin preparations for flooding potential. Users of the recreational campgrounds and adjacent waterside trails should be aware of the likelihood of rising water levels. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of flooding in and close to the watch area. Persons living along streams should stay alert and be prepared to take action if a warning or advisory is issued...or flooding is observed. This statement will be updated by 11 am akdt Thursday or sooner if conditions warrant. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2020 ADT: Cloudy with some breaks, SE very top of Mt. ALSO AN OVERFLIGHT OF THE BASIN INDICATED THAT SOME BATHTUB RINGS WERE STARTING TO APPEAR WHICH IS ANOTHER INDICATION THAT THE LAKE HAS BEGUN TO DRAIN. THIS LAKE DRAINS THROUGH THE MENDENHALL GLACIER INTO THE MENDENHALL LAKE AND DOWN THE MENDENHALL RIVER. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 1:47 PM AKDT on July 06, 2014 The Suicide Basin water level data provided at http://go.USA.Gov/xdaf has been restored to its previous calibration. As of 1 PM akdt Sunday...the water level was 80.16 feet. Scientists that visited the site Saturday estimate the water levels are currently less than what was observed in 2011. That was the first time water from Suicide Basin flooded into the Mendenhall Lake and river system. Lake and river levels in 2011 rose five to six feet after the water in suicide basin released over the course of several days. Once the rate of draining from Suicide Basin is known forecasters will be able to issue the first prediction of how high water levels may reach this year. This statement will be updated when new information becomes available. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1305: Partly Cloudy, variable sunshine in-and-out and here-and-there. 1250: Mostly/Partly Cloudy, sun shining here and there. 1200: .01" of Rainfall to this point today. 1150: Cloudy with breaks, variable sunshine. 1120: Mostly Cloudy, variable extremely weak to weakened sunshine. 1050: Partly Cloudy, sun shining in most areas. 0950: Partly Cloudy, variable sunshine. 0920: Mostly Cloudy, spots and areas of very weak to weakened sunshine on the mainland. 0905: Cloudy, some breaks. 0850: Partly Cloudy, variable sun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 0846: NWS: Special Statement about Suicide Basin. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 12:40 PM AKDT on July 04, 2014 ...Water level in Suicide Basin continues to rise... Suicide Basin is dammed by the Mendenhall Glacier and continues to accumulate water from rainfall and snow melt...raising the water level. The water level in the basin is under continuous monitoring by the National Weather Service and has visually exceeded the approximate level from both the 2012 glacier dam release event. Once the basin starts to drain it takes between 1 and 2 days for water from Suicide Basin to start affecting the water level in Mendenhall Lake and River. The crest of this event roughly occurs 4 days from when the rapid release on the basin is first noted. A glacier dam release occurs when there is sufficient water pressure to lift the glacier allowing the water from the basin to start draining under the glacier. At this time the basin gauge is reporting a water level above 74 feet and is rising steadily at about 2.5 feet per day. This event could occur at any time. The National Weather Service has not issued any Flood Watch...warning...or advisory for the Mendenhall Lake and River. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and will issue products as needed. Residents along the the Mendenhall River and Lake should be prepared to take any needed actions. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 4:52 PM AKDT on July 01, 2014 ...Water level in Suicide Basin continues to rise... Suicide Basin is dammed by the Mendenhall Glacier and continues to accumulate water from rainfall and snow melt...raising the water level. The water level in the basin is under continuous monitoring by the National Weather Service and has visually exceeded the approximate level from the 2012 glacier dam release event. At this time the basin gauge is reporting a water level above 65 feet and is rising steadily at about 2 feet per day. Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite local weather news source for updates on this situation. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1635: Cloudy. 1550: Cloudy, fairly bright. 1535: Cloudy, fairly bright. 1450: Cloudy. 1430: Cloudy, very, very weak bright spot where the sun is. 1350: Cloudy, a few breaks to the NW, blue sky very far to the NW. 1335: Cloudy with thicker clouds, area with very small to tiny breaks in the NW part of the sky, blue sky very far to the NW. 1320: Cloudy with some very slight to very small breaks, Partly Cloudy far to the NW, fairly bright skies, extremely weak to weak sunshine. 1250: Cloudy with small to medium sized clear areas in the NW part of the sky, fairly bright. 1235: Cloudy, very slightly to slightly filtered breaks in the NW part of the sky, fairly bright. 1215: Cloudy-Mostly Cloudy, bright skies, weak - weakened sunshine. 1205: Weakened sunshine. -------------------------------------------------------------- 1205: NWS: Record Monthly Rainfall for June at Juneau Airport.
