Sat. 9/07/13: DATA | 1206: NWS: Urban and Small Stream Flood
Advisory for...Montana Creek and the Juneau
area from 10 PM this evening until 4 PM ADT
Sunday - See 1206 Below
- 2137 ADT (Posted here 0620 9/08): The Urban and
Small Stream Flood Advisory remains in effect
until 400 PM ADT Sunday for Montana Creek
and the Juneau area.
NWS Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 9:37 PM AKDT on September 07, 2013
...The Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory remains in effect until
400 PM akdt Sunday for Montana Creek and the Juneau area...
At 924 PM akdt...a moist weather front moving over the northern
Inner Channels through Sunday with rain becoming heavy at times late
Saturday night. Rainfall amounts in the Juneau area are expected to
range from 1.5 to 2.5 inches through Sunday afternoon.
Water levels on area creeks and streams will begin to rapidly rise
as rainfall intensity increases tonight. With the ground being
saturated from previous rain events there is a high likelihood of
streams and creeks reaching bankfull overnight. Montana Creek is
expected to rise rapidly this late tonight and potentially reach
minor flood stage of 15.5 feet by Sunday morning. When the river
gauge on Montana Creek reads 15 ft water will begin to flow over the
Montana Creek Road just before the gun range in the Juneau area.
Other small creeks and streams such as Jordan Creek will also show
rapid rises but are less likely to exceed bankfull.
Rain will cause considerable ponding of water in low lying areas,
and near culverts.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite local
weather news source for updates on this situation.
A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

for...Montana Creek and the Juneau area until
4 PM ADT Sunday.
NWS Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 12:06 PM AKDT on September 07, 2013
The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued an
* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...Montana Creek and the
Juneau area
* until 400 PM akdt Sunday
* A moist weather front will move over the northern Inner Channels
today and persist into Sunday. Rain will increase in intensity later
Saturday afternoon and become heavy at times tonight into Sunday.
Rainfall amounts in the Juneau area are expected to range from 1.50
to 2.50 inches through Sunday afternoon.
* Water levels on area creeks and streams are low at this time but
will rapidly rise as rainfall intensity increases tonight. With the
ground being saturated from previous rain events there is a high
likelihood of streams and creeks reaching bankfull overnight.
Montana Creek is expected to rise rapidly this evening and
potentially reach minor flood stage on Sunday morning. When the
river gauge on Montana Creek reads 15 ft...water will begin to
flow over the Montana Creek Road just before the gun range in the
Juneau area.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any minor
flooding to your law enforcement agency. They will relay your report
to the National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau.
A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

NWS Areal Flood Watch
Statement as of 4:57 AM AKDT on September 04, 2013
...Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening...
The Flood Watch continues for
* a portion of AK...including the following area...Juneau
Borough and northern Admiralty Island.
* Through this evening
* A weather front moving into the Panhandle today is expected to
drop around an inch of rain...with greater amounts likely in the
higher terrain and in the back of the Mendenhall Valley. Rain
will be heavier through the morning hours and slacken into the
afternoon. With the ground somewhat saturated from the rains
experienced over the previous weekend...small streams and creeks
are rising. As of 4 am Montana Creek is at 11.6 feet and rising
more quickly. Rainfall rates have been rising to between 0.10
and 0.15 inches per hour through the early morning and will
remain high through mid morning. Montana Creek is forecast to
possibly reach minor flood stage with a level of 16.5 feet
sometime this afternoon. Jordan Creek is not expected to flood
but it is expected to rise to bankfull late this afternoon and
this evening. Whether flooding occurs will be dependent on both
rainfall amounts and rates. The higher the rain amounts and the
harder it falls...the more likely Montana Creek will flood.
* Minor flood stage on Montana Creek is at 15.5 feet which is
where water will potentially start crossing the low water
crossing on Montana Creek Road and inundate undeveloped fields
nearby. Jordan Creek reaches bankfull at 9.2 feet with minor
flood stage at 9.7 feet where parking lots and driveways near
the creek start to inundate with water.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of
flooding in and close to the watch area.
Persons living along streams should stay alert and be prepared to
take action if a warning or advisory is issued...or flooding is
observed.
This statement will be updated by 400 PM akdt Wednesday or sooner
if conditions warrant.

Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 9:45 AM AKDT on September 01, 2013
...The Flood Advisory remains in effect until 415 PM akdt Sunday for
Montana Creek near Juneau...
At 925 am akdt...around an inch and a quarter of rain has fallen
over the Montana Creek watershed in the last 12 hours which has
caused Montana Creek to rise above minor flood stage this morning.
As of 9 am Sunday morning water levels on Montana Creek are
currently starting to drop with a reading of 15.9 feet. This is down
from a crest of 16.6 feet that occurred around 7:30 this morning.
Rainfall rates in the area have decreased with only 0.09 inches in
the last 3 hours at the Juneau Weather Service office on Back Loop
and 0.11 inches in the last 3 hours at Montana Creek river gage.
However one band of rain is still forecast to move through the area
later today but should not bring more than a half an inch of
rainfall to the area through the rest of the day. Water levels on
Montana Creek should continue to decrease through the day dropping
below bankfull by later this afternoon.
Minor flood stage on Montana Creek is at 15.5 feet where water
begins to cross the low water crossing on Montana Creek Road and
inundate adjacent undeveloped fields.
Rain will cause considerable ponding of water in low lying areas,
near culverts, and along small creeks and drainages.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.
Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any minor
flooding to your law enforcement agency. They will relay your report
to the National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau.
