A stream of tropical moisture will move over the eastern Gulf of Alaska on Sunday and will be over the Panhandle by Tuesday. Temperatures will be rising to around 10 degrees above normal for the northern sections of Southeast Alaska into midweek. This pattern change will mean the snow level will rise to unseasonable heights and significant melting will occur. Rain on top of snow will make any snow become quite heavy and reduce the depth of the snowpack. Snow removal will become increasingly difficult. Expect water on top of persistent ice. Storm drains and other runoff structures should be cleared for proper drainage. Boat owners should be aware of increased water in bilges and open skiffs. Avalanche danger will be increasing. Backcountry users should maintain a heightened awareness. Freezing levels could rise as high as 5000 feet. A snow load chart is available on our web Page under articles. Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other sources of weather information for updates on the warming trend. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 0900: 02" of Melted Precipitation to this point today and there was 1-3/16" of Snowfall overnight (since 2100 hours 1/11) consisting of .04" of Melted Precipitation. 0850: Cloudy, mainland hidden by fog/clouds above about 250' - 350' and very slightly to slightly obscured below that. 0750: Cloudy, mainland hidden by fog/clouds above about 250' and very slightly to slightly obscured below that. 0700: .02" of Melted Precipitation to this point today and there was 1-3/16" of Snowfall overnight (since 2100 hours 1/11) consisting of .04" of Melted Precipitation. 0650: Cloudy, band and fog/clouds hiding most of the mainland above about 250'. 0620: Cloudy, mainland hidden by fog/clouds above about 300' and slightly to partially obscured below that. .02" of Melted Precipitation to this point today and there was 1-3/16" of Snowfall overnight (since 2100 hours 1/11) consisting of .04" of Melted Precipitation. 0100 AST: High Precipitation Rate of .01" of Precipitation per hour.
