A Winter Weather Advisory for snow remains in effect from 6 PM
this evening to 6 am akst Wednesday.
* Timing...snow will develop Tuesday evening becoming heavy at
times late. Snow will taper off by Wednesday morning.
* Snow...a wet snow of 2 to 6 inches is expected to fall Tuesday
night. Best accumulations are expected out the Road and deeper
in Mendenhall Valley. Little or no snow accumulation south of
the Airport.
* Location...snow is expected to fall mainly Mendenhall Valley and
northward.
* Other impacts...wet snow may accumulate on trees and power
lines and may cause power outages. Aircraft and boat owners
are urged to keep their vessels and aircraft cleared of heavy
snow.

...Winter Weather Advisory will expire at midnight akst tonight...
One more band of showers is expected to move through the north
central Panhandle by 3 am. An additional 1 to 2 inches of snow is
possible as the band moves through quickly by morning.
The amounts today ranged between 4 and 7 inches in Juneau and the
valley with nearly 7 inches at the office on Back Loop Road. Out
the Road along Lena Loop amounts varied between 10 and 12 inches.
This will be the final statement on this event.

The National Weather Service in Juneau has cancelled the Winter
Weather Advisory.
The front bringing in the heavier snowfall through the area has
passed and precipitation rates have greatly diminished. Up to
another two inches of snowfall is possible overnight...but some
areas will continue to receive rain.
Juneau snow reports varied widely across the area. Lena Point
received 7 inches of snow as of 6 pm. Mendenhall Back Loop received
0.3 inches as of 9 PM. The Juneau Airport received 4 inches as of
6 PM. West Juneau received 1.5 inches as of 330 PM. At times
locations south of the Mendenhall Valley received heavy rain even
as heavy snow was falling to the north.
Hoonah reported one inch as of 330 PM. Gustavus reported a trace
of snow through 10 PM.

Thursday then diminish Thursday evening as the front exits the
area to the southeast.
* Snow...up to 11 inches through Thursday afternoon. Heaviest snow
will fall Thursday morning into early afternoon.
* Impacts...travel may be difficult due to slippery conditions and
reduced visibility. Snow may become wet and heavy making snow
removal difficult.

Thursday...
Arctic air is currently moving south over the area...and will
continue to move across Southeast Alaska through Wednesday. A
fairly strong warm front is expected to move into the eastern Gulf
Wednesday night and remain there Thursday. Meanwhile low pressure
will move east across the northern Gulf Wednesday night and
Thursday...then across central Southeast Alaska Thursday night.
Warm air will overrun the cold air at lower levels...and lead to
potentially heavy snowfall late Wednesday night through Thursday
evening. While it is too early to give exact snowfall
amounts...snowfall of a foot or more is possible. Stay tuned to

to fall north of Auke Bay with expected totals 4 to 6 inches

* Main impact...motor vehicle travel is likely to become
hazardous. While snow fall amounts for areas south of Mendenhall
Valley will be lower as snow changes to rain in the afternoon

The steady heavy snow has tapered off. Periods of lighter snow
are expected to continue through the evening hours.

...Snow then rain...
Heavy snow continues for much of the northern Panhandle as of 2 PM
Thursday. Most areas have wet snow for significant snow loads and
difficult snow removal. Storm totals so far have ranged from 6
inches to up to 2 feet for lower elevations.
The Klondike Highway has had persistent blizzard conditions with
white-outs, blowing snow, and drifting snow. The Highway remains
closed as of 2 PM Thursday.
To add to the winter storm problems...the next weather system will
bring warmer air to the storm affected areas. Although the
snowfall rate will decrease Thursday night and Friday...expect the
snow to change to rain later on Friday and Friday night which
will add significant weight to the snow pack.
Impacts:
There have been power outages due to the weight of snow on trees
and tree limbs. Trees will be further stressed when the snow
changes to rain.
Snow continues to accumulate. Boaters and aircraft owners are
advised to remove snow to prevent damage or sinking.
Travel remains hazardous due to poor tire traction and poor
visibility.
When the snow changes to rain...snow loads will increase rapidly.
Skiers and other mountain travelers should check the latest
avalanche forecasts.
A recommended strategy would be to complete usual snow removal
operations before noon on Friday to prevent additional loading due

...Potential for heavy snow event Wednesday into Thursday...
Complex split flow weather pattern mid week may cause a heavy snow
event for the central and northern Panhandle. A strong weather
front associated with a 985 mb low in the AK Gulf will move over
the Panhandle Wednesday into Thursday bringing ample moisture.
Meanwhile a trough drops down from the AK interior pushing cold
air southward. A heavy snow band may develop along the convergence
of these two features. The position of the Arctic front and the
resulting rain snow line is uncertain at this time. Heaviest snow
fall will be over the northern Panhandle...especially along the
Haines and Klondike highways.
Some impacts will be difficult travel conditions due to reduced
visibility and slick roads. Snow may be heavy if mixed with rain
and difficult to remove.

The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a High Wind
Warning...which is in effect until 5 am akst Monday.
Strongest winds with gusts as high as 65 mph will occur along Taku
Inlet...near downtown Juneau and Douglas.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
People are urged to secure loose objects that could be blown
around or damaged by the wind.
Please ensure that your vessels are properly moored in Douglas
and Harris harbors.
A warning means that high winds are already occurring or
imminent. These winds could pose a threat to life and property.
This statement will be updated by 200 PM akst Sunday or sooner if
conditions warrant.
