NWS Flood Warning Cancellation
Statement as of 10:55 PM AKDT on August 18, 2013
...The Flood Warning due to rain has been cancelled
for Montana Creek in Juneau...
Montana Creek has fallen to 13.2 feet as of 10 PM akdt from a crest
of 16.6 feet at noon akdt Sunday. Another band of showers is moving
into the central Panhandle based on satellite and radar images and
this could bring more terrain enhanced rain to the area and bring
the water levels back above minor flood stage of 15.5 feet. However
these showers are not appearing as vigorous as they were earlier on
Sunday evening. As a result we expect that river level will continue
to lower into the early morning hours.
Based on the crest stage of 16.6 feet there would have been water
across the low water crossing at on Montana Creek Road. There have
been no other reports of damage or flooding at the forecast office
at this time.
This will be the final statement on this event.

NWS Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 4:52 PM AKDT on August 18, 2013
...The Flood Warning remains in effect until 500 am akdt Monday due
to rain in Juneau for Montana Creek...
At 433 PM akdt...the first band of heavy rain has moved through the
area. At WFO Juneau 2.33 inches fell between 4 am akdt and 4 PM with
a nearly identical amount at the Montana Creek precipitation
gauge. 2 inches of this fell between 4 am and 10 am akdt. Total
precipitation in gauges near the Montana Creek basin have been over
2.5 inches in the last 24 hours.
Montana Creek has fallen to 14.8 feet as of 5 PM akdt from a crest
of 16.6 feet at noon akdt Sunday. Another band of showers is moving
into the central Panhandle based on satellite and radar images and
this could bring more terrain enhanced rain to the area and bring
the water levels back above minor flood stage of 15.5 feet with
crest near 16 feet later this evening.
At 15 feet water will begin to flow over the Montana Creek Road
just before the gun range in the Juneau area. Water begins to
inundate adjacent fields. When the river gage reaches 17 feet the
Mendenhall Loop Road near Montana Creek begins to flood. Houses on
the northwest side of Mendenhall Loop Road may have water up to
their foundations and become surrounded by water.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
When the river gauge on Montana Creek reads 15 ft water will begin to
flow over the Montana Creek Road just before the gun range in the
Juneau area.
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the

safely. Move to higher ground.

rainfall rates are from one quarter to three quarters of an inch per

areas with urban type development will experience ponding on roads
