As of 715 PM akdt, the Mendenhall Lake stage was at 8.65 ft and falling rapidly. Flood stage for Mendenhall Lake is 9.0 ft. As of 700 PM akdt, the Mendenhall River stage measured at Back Loop Bridge was 10.78 ft and falling rapidly. Flood stage for the Mendenhall river is 11.5 ft. The flooding that occurred on 21 July was the second highest level recorded for both the Mendenhall River and Mendenhall Lake. The river crested first today at 1115 PM akdt with a stage of 13.07 feet. The highest level on file for this river is 13.75 ft which occurred in September of 1995. The lake crested shortly thereafter at 1200 PM akdt with a stage of 10.93 ft. The highest level for Mendenhall Lake on file is 11.18 ft which also occurred in September of 1995. Aerial and on-ice surveys conducted on the Mendenhall Glacier earlier today revealed the source of today's flooding as a subsurface lake which had formed underneath the ice in the Lower Basin near Suicide Falls. Based on the pattern of fractured ice and the area of caved in ice, it is estimated that the subsurface lake was approximately 85,000 square meters in size. The aerial survey also indicated that this lake has drained completely and there is little to no risk for additional flooding related to this event. The Skaters Cabin campground will remain closed pending a Post-flood survey to be conducted by the U.S. Forest Service on Friday, 22 July. At 241 PM akdt...both the lake and river have crested and flood waters are receding. The Mendenhall River crested at 13.07 feet at 1115 akdt and the observation at 12.90 feet at 1330 akdt. The Mendenhall Lake crested at 10.93 feet at noon and the observation at 1415 akdt was 10.47 feet. Both readings are still above flood stage. Due to the uncertainty with a glacial release...the Flood Warning will remain in effect until 2200 akdt. The Skaters Cabin campground remains closed. The outflow into Mendenhall Lake that is visible from the Glacier visitor center is observed to have greatly diminished. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. Precautionary/preparedness actions... When the USGS river gauge on Mendenhall Lake reads 9 ft water will begin to cover Mendenhall Lake Spur Road between Skaters Cabin and West Glacier trailhead in the Juneau area. The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia and lower the time required to cause hypothermia. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground. Areal Flood Warning Statement as of 9:25 AM AKDT on July 21, 2011 The National Weather Service in Juneau has extended the * Flood Warning due to a Glacial Lake outburst for the...Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River * until 1000 PM akdt Thursday * at 900 am akdt...the USGS river gage along the Mendenhall Lake was reporting 10.61 ft and the gauge along the Mendenhall River was reporting 12.78 ft. Both the lake and river are continuing to rise at a significant rate. Moderate flood stage for the Mendenhall river is 12.5 ft and 10.0 ft for the Mendenhall Lake. At this time there is much uncertainty as to how much more the water will rise but with visual reports indicate this will continue to rise through the evening. * Flood waters will continue to impact the Skaters Cabin Spur Road, Mendenhall campground and places along View Drive. Forest Service rangers have closed the Mendenhall campground along with The Spur Road going to West Glacier trailhead. They want to remind people to stay away from the area. There is also water encroaching to cut off View Drive along the Mendenhall River with a high likeliness that the Road will be totally flooded by early afternoon. The local emergency manager wants to remind people viewing the flood from the Mendenhall river to be aware that with the high volume of water it may destabilize the river bank and to stay away from the river sides. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. Precautionary/preparedness actions... When the USGS river gauge on Mendenhall Lake reads 10 ft water will cover Mendenhall Lake Spur Road between Skaters Cabin and West Glacier trailhead and cover portions of the Mendenhall Camp Ground with 2 ft or more of water. The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia and lower the time required to cause hypothermia. If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins to rise. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground. Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice...turn around...don't drown. Water levels on the lake have been rising at a rate of about 2 inches per hour for the past 12 hours. An important thing to note is that it is uncertain how high the water will get with this event since it is a first time occurrence...and it is not known where the exact source of the release is and how much water was or is being released from it. If you live near or along Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River stay alert and be prepared to take action. Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges...dips...or low water crossings. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground. Do not underestimate the power of flood waters. Only a few inches of rapidly flowing water can quickly carry away your vehicle. Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any flooding to your law enforcement agency.
