NWS Special Statement
Statement as of 5:16 AM AKST on December 24, 2011
...Strong storm to impact Southeast Alaska Monday...
Another in the series of lows to impact Southeast Alaska is
expected to move northward over the eastern Gulf and then
northwest to the Prince William Sound region by Tuesday. This
system is expected to be one of the stronger systems to impact the
Panhandle in the last week or so.
The potential for storm force winds over the outer coastal waters
and into some of the Inner Channels are very likely for
Monday...and this also means that there will be some very gusty
winds for the coastal communities along the outer coast too.
Residents should take necessary precautions as needed.
An offshore flow pattern will import some cooler temperatures over
the northern portions of the Panhandle late Sunday and Monday.
This will result in the northern Panhandle likely starting as
snow combined with some mid latitude moisture that will be pulled
into this system...could result in some heavier snowfall totals
over the northern portion of the Panhandle.

NWS Special Statement
Statement as of 12:15 PM AKST on December 21, 2011
...Very wet and windy in Southeast Alaska through Friday...
Wednesday night through Friday will be very wet across Southeast
Alaska. Precipitation will be all rain in southeast communities at
sea level. One to two feet of new snow is likely in the mountains
above 1000 feet from about Juneau northward by Thursday afternoon.
Snow levels over the northern Panhandle will lower to just a few
hundred feet tonight but are forecast rise to around 1500 feet on
Thursday. Snow levels over the southern Panhandle will be between
2000 and 3000 feet Thursday and rising through Friday.
Rainfall amounts at lower elevations are expected to be between
three and five inches Wednesday night through Friday. Ponding of
water along streets and parking lots will cause potentially
hazardous conditions for drivers and pedestrians...especially where
water covers hard packed icy surfaces.
Along with the heavy precipitation...winds will be increasing over
the Panhandle. Prevailing southeast wind will be 25 to 40 mph
Thursday and Thursday night with gusts as high as 50 mph possible.
People may want to secure loose objects and outdoor decorations.
Waves on the Inner Channels will build to 5 to 10 feet while seas
offshore will be in the 20 to 30 foot range Thursday into Friday.
People are urged to pay attention to weather forecasts the next few
days and monitor the latest conditions in your area.

NWS Special Statement
Statement as of 1:26 PM AKST on December 05, 2011
...Potential for black ice tonight across the northern and central
Panhandle...
Heavy rain fell across much of the Panhandle today leading to wet
pavement and ponding on area roadways. Diminishing cloud cover this
evening will lead to falling temperatures overnight with most areas
north of Frederick Sound falling below freezing Monday night into
Tuesday morning. Low temperatures will range from the lower 20s in
the far northern areas to near freezing over the central Inner
Channels. Standing water from today's rainfall combined with
snow-melt will lead to the development of black ice as temperatures
fall below freezing. This will create hazardous driving conditions
overnight and through much of Tuesday morning. Travel with caution
as roads will be slippery...reduce speeds and keep a safe distance
from other cars.
