Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 7:33 PM AKDT on August 22, 2011
...The Flood Warning due to rain remains in effect until noon akdt
Wednesday for the Mendenhall Lake and River...
At 730 PM akdt...rain continues in the Juneau area with water
running off into Mendenhall Lake and River.
This runoff has maintained the water level of the Mendenhall Lake
and river around moderate flood stage. The stage on Mendenhall Lake
was 10.04 feet as of 715 PM. The moderate flood stage is 10 feet.
The Mendenhall River was at 12.24 feet...slightly below the 12.5
foot flood stage. Moderate flooding on the lake and river will cause
significant water to flow onto the Mendenhall campground...view
drive...and Mendenhall Lake Spur Road areas.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
When the USGS river gauge on Mendenhall Lake reads 9 ft water will
begin to cover Mendenhall Lake Spur Road between Skaters Cabin and
West Glacier trailhead in the Juneau area.
If you live near or along the Mendenhall Lake and River stay alert
and
be prepared to take action.
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.
Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any flooding to
your law enforcement agency. They will relay your report to the
National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau.
Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite local
weather news source for updates on this situation.

of 115 PM...just below the moderate flood stage of 10 feet. The
Mendenhall River was at 11.95 feet...just below the 12.5 foot flood
stage.
If you live near or along Mendenhall Lake and River stay alert and
be prepared to take action.
Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges...dips...or low water
crossings. Never try to cross a flowing stream...even a small one...
on foot. If you encounter a flooded roadway...turn around...don't
drown.
If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to higher ground to
escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when
water begins to rise.
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.
Do not underestimate the power of flood waters. Only a few inches of
rapidly flowing water can quickly carry away your vehicle.
Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any flooding to
your law enforcement agency. They will relay your report to the
National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau.
Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite local
weather news source for updates on this situation.

deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful

Flood Watch / Flood Statement
Statement as of 4:16 PM AKDT on August 20, 2011
...The small stream Flood Advisory has expired for northern
Southeast Alaska...
At 400 PM akdt...moderate rain continued portions of northern
Panhandle. However...most rainfall diminished majority part of
northern Panhandle. Small streams...such as Montana Creek and Taiya
River near Skagway remain above minor flood stage but will begin
receding rapidly over the next several hours. Staney Creek near
Klawock had reached minor flood stage but began receding rapidly.
Therefore...the small stream Flood Advisory has expired.
Remain cautious when in low-lying areas as it takes a little more
time to recede water levels down to normal flow.

At 441 am akdt...moderate to heavy rain falling over the northern

rates up to one quarter inch per hour. Rain will diminish through
Saturday afternoon. Rainfall amounts up to 3 inches are expected
with heaviest amounts along southern slopes.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice...turn around...don't drown.
A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.
