NWS Special Weather Statement Statement as of 4:24 PM AKDT on July 25, 2009 ...Hot and dry weather expected next week... High pressure is strengthening over Southeast Alaska and northwest Canada this weekend. The high is already causing skies to clear and temperatures to warm over southern portions of the Panhandle but clouds from a dying front in the central Gulf of Alaska will delay the significant warming along the northeast Gulf Coast and northern Panhandle until Tuesday. By Wednesday and Thursday daytime high temperatures are likely to be 15 to 25 degrees above average...especially over interior sections of Southeast Alaska. Most interior areas will reach the 80s at that time...however some isolated locations may get to the lower 90s. The well above average temperatures will increase Glacier melt causing additional runoff and a slow rise of glacial rivers and streams next week. Fire danger will also increase due to the hot and dry conditions. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1550: Partly Cloudy. 1450: Partly Cloudy. 1350: Partly Cloudy. 1335: Partly Cloudy, variable strength sunshine here and there. 1250: Mostly Cloudy, bright skies, variable strength sunshine here and there. 1220: Partly Cloudy, somewhat weakened sunshine. 1205: Cloudy with slightly and partly broken clouds, bright skies, weakened sunshine. 1150: Cloudy with area of very slightly broken clouds, fairly bright skies with bright clouds where the sun is, very weak sunshine. 1050: Cloudy with very slightly broken clouds, bright spot where the sun is. 0952: The Sun is trying to break through. 0950: Cloudy with bright fissures in the clouds and some extremely tiny breaks. 0850: Cloudy with a few hints of breaks. 0820: Cloudy, a few very tiny breaks. 0750: Cloudy with slightly - very slightly broken clouds in areas, a few lower wisps and small ribbons. 0743: The Sun is trying to break through. 0650: Cloudy with large area of slightly broken clouds, ribbon of fog low over the Channel hiding parts of the mainland below about 100' - 200'. 0635: Cloudy with tiny hints of breaks and areas with very slightly broken clouds, fog low over the Channel hiding the mainland below about 350' - 400'. 0620 ADT: Cloudy with slightly - partly broken clouds, fog over Gastineau Channel hiding the lower part of the mainland, sun trying at times. Areal Flood Warning Statement as of 3:54 PM AKDT on July 23, 2009 ...The Flood Warning remains in effect until 700 PM akdt Friday for a glacial dammed lake outburst for Lake Nolake on the Taku River... * at 330 PM akdt...the annual release of the Glacier dammed Lake No lake into the Taku River is ongoing. The current stage of the Taku river is 42.85 feet and continuing to rise at a steady rate. It is expected that the Taku River will crest between 44 and 45 feet by Friday afternoon. As with the above average snow pack this winter along with above average temperatures this Summer this outburst flood could be a repeat of the 2004 event. There is high probability that moderate flood stage of 44 feet will be exceeded with the possibility of reaching major flood stage of 45 feet. * Moderate flood waters will cause the river to inundate yards and some homes. If the water continues to rise above 45 feet numerous homes could flood and cause damage to property. Along with the flooding there will be a lot of debris flowing down the river along with ice chunks that can damage docks. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. Precautionary/preparedness actions... If you live near or along Taku River stay alert and be prepared to take action. The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia and lower the time required to cause hypothermia.
