Above average temperatures and periods of rain will persist this week across Southeast Alaska. Water levels are high for low lying roads...parking lots...drains...ditches...and small streams. Water may intrude basements...garages and crawl spaces. The weight of the existing deep snowpack will continue increasing this week making for heavier loads on roofs...gutters...sheds...boats...boat shelters...and piers. On Tuesday morning...the water equivalent of the snowpack at National Weather Service offices was 6.2 inches for Juneau and 6.1 inches for Yakutat. Property owners should take action to protect against rising water levels and heavier snow loads. Beware of heavy snow falling or sliding off of roofs. Monday was the wettest day across the Panhandle. Lesser rainfall rates are occurring Tuesday due to a warm front moving from south to north over the Panhandle. Snow will also continue along higher elevations but freezing levels are rising up to 4000 feet inland and up to 7000 feet along the outer coast. Because the weather fronts are coming from the tropics temperatures will remain much above average all week with high temperatures in the upper 30s to upper 40s. Night time temperatures may briefly fall to near freezing especially from Juneau northward causing wet surfaces to turn icy. At 502 am akst...Biorka radar is indicating heavy rain moving over the Panhandle this morning and will continue into the afternoon. The weather front over the Gulf will continue to spread heavy rain across the area along with raising freezing levels. This weather front will produce 1 to 2 inches of rain and with the deep snow pack cause drainage problems. Many drains are likely to be blocked with snow and cause standing water on roadways. Small streams will rise as the freezing levels rise through the day. The rain on the deep snow pack will also increase the weight and density of the snow. People are urged to take precaution and move snow off roofs. A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately. The ongoing torrential rains and snowload could swamp boats. Mariners should protect their vessels immediately. A very unusual mid winter warm storm is expected to bring heavy rain to Southeast Alaska tonight and Monday. An average of 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected with as high as 4 inches possible in the upslope terrain locations. In addition...freezing levels will rise to above 2000 feet across the north to over 4000 feet in the south by early next week. This unusual warm weather pattern and possible heavy rain combined with deep snow pack across the local region could result in significant rises in water levels in ditches...small streams and local rivers as well as blocked drains. There also will be an increased risk of avalanche and snow slides. Another impact is significant water added to heavy snow loads on roofs. Persons across Southeast Alaska...especially those venturing into the back country or near a flood prone area...should monitor this developing situation very closely.
