NWS Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 12:21 PM AKDT on August 18, 2009
The National Weather Service in Juneau has extended the
* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for minor flooding of poor
drainage areas near...Mendenhall Lake.
* Until 630 PM akdt
* at 1214 PM akdt...Mendenhall Lake was near 9.51 ft which is just
above flood stage of 9.5 ft. The Mendenhall River was also just
above action stage of 12 ft at 12.04 ft.
* Rainfall amounts across the Juneau area will be much lighter this
afternoon and so both Mendenhall Lake and River will continue to
drop. Both are expected to be below flood stage by 1230 PM akdt
today. Montana Creek waters have receded below action at 3 am akdt
this morning. Ponding on the Montana Creek Road...near skaters
cabin...and in other areas of poor drainage will continue through
the afternoon.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice...turn around...don't drown.
A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

drainage areas in...Montana Creek and Mendenhall River of Juneau area
* until 930 PM akdt
* at 236 PM akdt...rainfall continues to fall and will through the
evening.
* Montana Creek has crested as of 9 am this morning and has begun to
fall. The Mendenhall River and Lake level are still expected to
continue to rise through the early evening before subsiding by 10
PM. Reports indicate that there is water over the Road near Skaters
Cabin and several inches of water running over Montana Creek Road.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
When the USGS river gauge on Montana creek reads 15 ft water will
begin to flow over the Montana Creek Road just before the gun range
in the Juneau area.
When the USGS river gauge on Mendenhall Lake reads 9 ft water will
begin to cover Mendenhall Lake Spur Road between Skaters Cabin and
West Glacier trailhead in the Juneau area.
Storm drains should be kept clear of debris as much as possible.

NWS: Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 6:33 AM AKDT on August 03, 2009
...Smokey and hazy conditions to persist through Wednesday...
Smoke from several wild land fires sparked by recent dry
lightning in the Yukon and British Columbia has moved into the
Southeast Alaska Panhandle. Light northerly winds will bring
smokey and hazy conditions to the Panhandle through Wednesday.
The strongest concentration of smoke is expected in the northern
interior areas where visibility will be reduced to between 5 and 8
miles during the day. Night time inversions in sheltered areas
will concentrate the smoke in those areas. Visibility reductions
to near 2 miles are possible in wind sheltered areas at night.
Smoke will not be as concentrated in the southern Panhandle and
areas near the outer coast. Visibility is generally expected to
remain above 8 miles.
