Another fierce storm system will move into the Gulf of Alaska on Sunday on the heels of the present storm. Forecasters are confident that this low pressure system will begin to affect the Southeast Alaska coast Sunday with storm force winds and hurricane force wind gusts. The first front associated with this storm will move inland Sunday afternoon bringing very strong winds plus heavy rain and snow. The second front will move onto the coast early Monday morning with more rain than snow but with continued very strong winds. Southeast Alaska residents should expect periods of hazardous weather through the Holiday weekend into next week. The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a Winter Storm Watch...which is in effect from this evening through late Saturday night. Snow...heavy at times is expected to develop Friday night and continue through early Saturday afternoon. Snow accumulations of 10 to locally as much as 20 inches of new snow are possible in the watch area. A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of winter storm conditions in and close to the watch area. Preparation for this potentially dangerous weather event should begin now.
