Editor (me): As far as I'm concerned the Real-ID Act is unconstitutional (the right to travel without interference from the government being just one of the issues); why the American people love to give the government so much power and control I have no idea. In Juneau there will be no way to travel out of town with the odious invasive requirements of Real ID, or a Passport (in our own country!) being in place and enforced. Add to that the facial recognition systems being implemented and we are also living in a surveillance state. March was noteworthy for some very heavy snowfall that began in the waning hours of February 28th and continued for nearly the entire first half of the month. A multi-day winter storm warning for the Juneau area produced 16.9 inches of new snow at the Forecast Office before stopping late in the night of the 13th. Heavy snow began once again on the 15th and resulted in additional winter weather advisories and warnings for the northern panhandle. What was most unusual about these snow events is that they were not followed immediately by low level warm air advection and a transition from snow to rain. In fact, an extended cold outflow event followed the first major snow event which allowed snow to remain on the ground and present a true winter scene over most of the Panhandle. At least four unplanned avalanches reported with three in the Juneau area and one in the Sitka area. Bitterly cold temperatures also resulted in a protracted wind chill advisory for the Klondike Highway as well as periods of heavy freezing spray for several of the inner channels. With the equinox on the 20th of March and the true beginning of Spring, temperatures moderated a little with more rain and less snow, particularly over the southern Panhandle, but accumulating snow lasted over northern and central portions of the Panhandle through the end of the month. In spite of the all the March snow, the month broke no monthly snowfall records in Yakutat, Juneau, or Annette Island which ranked 40th, 8th and 2nd snowiest, respectively. --------------------------------------------------------------------
