NWS Areal Flood Warning Statement as of 10:25 PM AKDT on June 30, 2016 ...A Flood Warning from a Glacier-dammed lake outburst remains in effect until 815 am akdt Saturday for Mendenhall River in the central Inner Channels... At 1015 PM akdt...reporting gauges indicated a Glacier-dammed lake outburst along the Mendenhall river will continue. The added water from the Glacier-dammed lake into the river system will result in continued river rises through Friday evening. The river is currently rising at around 1.5 inches per hour. Estimated Suicide Basin Lake level prior to release indicates that Mendenhall river could see similar levels to the 2014 record event of 11.85 feet. For the Mendenhall lake: at 1015 PM akdt the stage was 7.4 feet. Flood stage is 9.0 feet. Forecast: 11.6 feet around 10 PM on July 1. Inherent uncertainty in initial Glacial Lake volume will result in varying crest height and timing with a chance of exceeding record levels. Impacts: at 9.1 feet: water covers West Glacier Spur Road between Skaters cabin and West Glacier trailhead...also water will flow into the Mendenhall Lake campground. At 10.0 feet: water levels will inundate Mendenhall campground with up to 3 feet of water covering low areas along with up to 1.5 feet of water covering West Glacier Spur Road. Portions of West Glacier trail will be impassable. At 11.0 feet: View Drive will be flooded and impassable with significant flooding to some homes in the area. Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite local weather news source for updates on this situation. If you live near or along Mendenhall River system stay alert and be prepared to take action. The Taku River crested late this morning at 38.7 feet. River levels will fall quickly through the next 24 hours. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 8:40 AM AKDT on June 04, 2016 ...Glacier Dam Release on the Taku River... A glacial dam release from the Tulsequah Glacier is the cause of the persistent rise in water levels on the Taku River. The river level is currently 38.5 feet and rising 1 foot per 10 hours. This event started on June first and the water levels are expected to continue rising through Sunday evening. The river is forecasted to crest between 40 to 41 feet which is below flood stage of 43 feet. Uncertainty in the initial glacial lake (Lake No Lake) volume will result in varying crest height and timing. People along the Taku River should remain aware of the situation. Debris floating down the Taku River into Taku Inlet is possible. In addition...Falling water temperatures can lower the time required to cause hypothermia. The May average monthly temperature was once again above normal in Juneau, which marks the 8th month in a row with warmer than normal conditions. There were three multi-day periods with significantly warmer than normal daytime highs which coincided with the most pleasant and driest weather of the month - the 11th through the 15th, the 19th through the 21st, and the 26th through the 29th. Besides the warmer than normal highs, mostly clear skies during the second and third week also produced overnight lows at or below normal. The warmest day of the month occurred during the particularly warm second week of the month when the temperature rose to 79 degrees on the 13th. This was a new record for that date, as was the following day when the temperature rose to 77 degrees. The coolest night of the month also occurred that week when the temperature fell to 37 degrees on the night of the 11th. May was also significantly wetter than normal and stands in stark contrast to May of 2015, which was the driest May on record. The wetter conditions during May of 2016 were aided by significantly warmer than normal sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Alaska and a prevailing jet stream that steered storm systems over the panhandle. The 5.67 inches of rain recorded at the airport was 67 percent above normal, which is unusual considering that May is usually one of the driest months for Juneau. In fact, this past May was more like a normal August in terms of precipitation. One daily precipitation record was set on May 6th, when 1.56 inches was recorded at the airport. On that same day, 1.42 inches of rain was recorded downtown and 1.33 inches was recorded at the weather office on Back Loop Road. In spite of the wetter than normal conditions, May recorded only 10 days with fog at the airport - mostly in the first week of the month. While statistics on fog are harder to quantify, the lack of fog this past May was typical for late spring and summer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Wed. 6/01/16: The world's longest rail tunnel: the Gotthard Base Tunnel Opens Today - Deutsche Welle 2020 ADT: Very, very light sprinkling, cloudy, very top - top of Mt.
