JANUARY 2016 WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR ABNORMALLY WARM TEMPERATURES AND FOR RECORD LOW SNOWFALL. THE MONTH BEGAN ON A WARM NOTE WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES ON THE 1ST AND 2ND ABOVE 40 DEGREES. THE 4TH THROUGH THE 9TH MARKED THE ONLY STRETCH OF BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR JANUARY WITH DAY TIME HIGHS BELOW THE FREEZING MARK AND MORNING LOWS AS LOW AS 16 DEGREES. FROM THE 10TH THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH...A SERIES OF WARM STORM SYSTEMS MOVED ACROSS SOUTHEAST ALASKA FROM THE SOUTHWEST. TEMPERATURES REMAINED WELL ABOVE NORMAL...PEAKING AS HIGH AS 47 DEGREES ON THE 27TH WHICH WAS A DAILY RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE JUNEAU AIRPORT. IN SPITE OF THE STRING OF COOLER THAN NORMAL DAYS NEAR THE BEGINING OF THE MONTH...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE JUNEAU AIRPORT WAS 6.6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY. JANUARY BEGAN WITH A RAINY STORM SYSTEM...A STARK CONTRAST FROM A COLD AND SNOWY DECEMBER. THE MONTH THEN REMAINED DRIER THAN NORMAL FROM THE 4TH THROUGH THE 9TH AS A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE BROUGHT THE COOL TEMPERATURES AND CLEARING SKIES TO THE JUNEAU AREA. THE MONTH ENDED WITH A SERIES OF FRONTAL SYSTEMS FROM THE CENTRAL PACIFIC BRINGING HIGH AMOUNTS OF MOISTURE INTO THE PANHANDLE. THE PRECIPITATION PEAKED ON THE 27TH AND 28TH AS THE AIRPORT RECORDED TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH GREATER THAN 0.75 INCHES OF RAIN. OVERALL THE 6.53 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION RECORDED DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY BOOSTED THE AIRPORT TO 1.18 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL TO START THE YEAR. BECAUSE OF THE WARM AIR PULLED INTO THE PANHANDLE WITH THE CONSECUTIVE STORM SYSTEMS...THE JUNEAU AIRPORT ONLY RECORDED A TRACE OF SNOWFALL DURING JANUARY. THIS TIES THE RECORD FOR THE LEAST AMOUNT OF SNOW EVER RECORDED FOR THE JUNEAU AIRPORT...A RECORD THAT DATES BACK TO 1942. ALONG WITH THE RAIN...THE JUNEAU AREA ALSO EXPERIENCED HIGH WINDS ON THE MORNING OF THE 26TH AS A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM TRACKED ACROSS THE AREA. THE AIRPORT RECORDED A PEAK GUST OF 59 MPH DURING THIS STORM WHILE MANY AREAS AROUND JUNEAU RECORDED WIND GUSTS OF 60 TO 70 MPH. OVERALL THE MONTH OF JANUARY...WITH ITS WARM TEMPERATURES...RAIN AND WIND WAS MORE REMINISCENT OF A WEATHER PATTERN DURING THE AUTUMN SEASON THAN THE HEART OF WINTER. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mon. 2/01/16: 0311: NWS: Dense Fog Advisory is Cancelled - See 0311 Below 2020 AST: Cloudy, some small breaks - either to clear sky or to a higher overcast (no stars are visible).
