Conditions become more and more favorable for a prolonged, potentially dense, fog event Sunday into mid week. Winds through the inner channels will gradually decrease along with an inversion of increasing temperatures aloft. Confidence is greatest for areas of fog from Yakutat south to Kake on Monday. An increase in north wind on Wednesday will likely put an end to the fog event. Visibility could become poor at times and cause disruptions to aviation and marine travel. This situation will be monitored closely over the next several days. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri. 12/30/16: 0927: 3.4 Magnitude Earthquake 27 miles NNW of Juneau, some 4.5 miles East of Echo Cove - See 0927 Below | What We Heard: City and Borough of Juneau Parks and Recreation Master Plan Preliminary Findings (PDF) .... Juneau...Petersburg...Wrangell...Kake 746 PM AKST Thu Dec 29 2016 ...VERY STRONG WEATHER SYSTEM WILL AFFECT SOUTHEAST ALASKA FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT... A fast moving weather system will cause high winds and rough seas Friday and Friday night. The most significant weather will occur in the northern half of the Panhandle Friday afternoon and evening. South winds will likely gust to over 50 mph by mid day Friday in Lynn Canal...Skagway...and the Klondike Highway. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect Friday for White Pass for blowing snow causing low visibilities. Waves in Lynn Canal will build to 7 feet. Precipitation will be mainly rain in communities near sea level. An abrupt switch in wind direction will occur after the weather front moves through late Friday afternoon and continues south Friday night. North winds could peak to 50 mph or higher between 3 pm and 6 pm Friday in Lynn Canal. This will cause a very confused and dangerous sea state. The air mass will also be very turbulent. People planning travel by land...air...or sea in the northern panhandle Friday and Friday night should pay close attention to weather conditions. Abrupt weather changes will reach the southern Panhandle by Saturday morning but winds and seas will be less compared to the northern Panhandle. Clearing and cooler conditions will return to Southeast Alaska Saturday night and into next week. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1920: Cloudy, lower ribbons and ribbon/band. 1850: Very, very light snow, cloudy, lower band. 1/4" of Snowfall to this point. 1832: High Precipitation Rate of .10" of Melted Precipitation per hour. 1820: Snow (with a little slush starting to accumulate), Cloudy, mainland slightly to partially obscured at the least. 1800: .04" of Rainfall to this point today. 1750: Cloudy, a few lower ribbons, bits, and wisps of clouds. 1712: FVF Fairweather sailings for Friday, Dec. 30 are canceled due to high winds and heavy seas. A strong weather front approaching the Gulf of Alaska from the west will move ashore across Southeast Alaska Christmas Day into Monday. Snowfall will begin with this system throughout the panhandle. There will be a changeover to rain for the coast by late Christmas Day into Sunday evening from Sitka south. But areas from Ketchikan north to Petersburg, Wrangell, Juneau, and Haines could see significant accumulations before any changeover occurs. However, depending on how the storm evolves, accumulations across the north could be less significant. Likewise, accumulations across the south could also be less significant should warmer air arrive earlier than expected. Highest accumulations will likely occur Sunday afternoon and evening for the southern Inner Channels, Sunday afternoon through Monday morning for the central Panhandle, and Sunday through mid-day Monday for the northern Inner Channels. Additionally...strong winds will accompany this front...producing wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph. Strongest winds will likely afflict the outer coast from Cape Spencer to the southern Inner Channels. Numerous high wind events occurred during the first two weeks of the month, accompanied by a lot of precipitation in the form of rain across the panhandle. There was also heavy thunderstorm activity of near super cell intensity during the third week of November (outer coast). Hail was reported at multiple sites on the both the 10th and the 11th of the month. Temperatures during the first half of the month trended well above normal for both daytime highs and overnight lows. Beginning with the third week of the month, daily average temperatures began falling - first down to normal, and then below normal by the start of the 4th week of November. Departures below normal were more notable over northern locations and near the coast mountains. This occurred primarily due to a protracted but fairly weak outflow event that dominated southeast weather for much of the second half of the month. While no high wind events occurred, there were several episodes of strong winds with northerly gales over the far northern inner channels. The cold surface air was followed by a weak overrunning event which allowed for the second accumulating snow event for much of the panhandle between the 21st and the 23rd of the month. As is typically the case with such overrunning events, the cold near- surface air was slowly scoured out, raising average temperatures up to near normal values for late November and transitioning snow showers to rain showers. The month ended much as it began with a high wind event that affected the southern panhandle most severely. Additionally, significant snowfall accumulated along both highways (Haines & Skagway). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri. 12/02/16: 0852: NWS: The High Wind Warning is Cancelled - See 0852 Below | The Nutcracker by Juneau Dance Theatre - 7 PM tonight at the Juneau-Douglas High School Auditorium | 0636: Now Available: The November 2016 Monthly Report, and the updated Weather Database | Planning Commission OKs pot shop on Front St. - Juneau Empire ....
