They finally had the courage to act and stand-up for the rights of the passengers who are the ones actually paying the tax; it added in effect a tax just to enter the CBJ by ship as if we were a foreign country because of the way they spent (and want to spend) much of the money. It would be the equivalent of taxing airline passengers for sidewalks downtown, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum (which was/is getting head tax money), and all the other non-port and dock things the City has spent the head tax money on. It should have been challenged in court many years ago, but they finally acted after the CBJ pushed the envelope too far with the $10 million dollar seawalk and artificial island going to "Bridge Park", and adding fill to expand the area for the park, plus the money preparing "Bridge Park" for the Whale sculpture. "Shabby" AKA known as the real world; their cars need to adapt, not the whole world to their poorly performing "self-driving" cars which haven't even been tried yet in rain and snow, gravel roads, mud on the pavement, construction zones, etc.. Lane markings can wear away over the course of the winter, let alone snow and ice covering them. In Juneau I know hot-applied thermoplastic, cold-applied thermoplastic, reflective recessed snow plowable pavement markers, and paint based (don't know what types) markings have all been used with little long-term success for any of them because of normal wear-and-tear, snowplows, studded tires, and sand-gravel spread on the roads. Maybe an embedded wire or periodic metallic embedments in the pavement or base or sub-base might work for their cars? But... how to distinguish those from all the other cables, conduits, drainage pipes, water and sewer lines, etc.? One could inject some sort of signal into continuous wires, or a passive RFID type system could be in the embedment(s). In the end someone has to pay for the wires or embedments, equipment, and the operation and maintenance of the whole system. How about it being law that if they accidentally drop a package on my property it's mine? How about a "royalty" payment by law that is a percentage of package value paid proportionately to each landowner for the amount of time it passes over each piece of private property? I'm Not Your Buddy Guy •an hour ago I am not some internet tough guy who is going to brag about how he's going to shoot down drones (I'm not, it's illegal). I am concerned though that the FAA is arbitrarily deciding to allocate property rights which have historically been mine -- the airspace over my property-- to someone else for commercial reasons. I'm also concerned about the right to privacy and my "pursuit of happiness" being abridged -- basically the 99.97% of Americans who are uncomfortable with things flying immediately over their heads and who don't want it. Where are our rights? The government bans smoking and noises because they are a nuisance, what about the right to sit in my yard or walk down the street and not be harassed by a drone? RedCoatYankee •2 hours ago Time to invent a localized directional-EMP to make them drop out of the sky over your property ... and not have to shoot them like a clay-pigeon. These things should simply be illegal. End of story. Just because the news media wants to invade everyone's privacy, does not create a social imperative to allow the exploitation of these devices this way. The entitlement of the press should be curbed ... it _isn't_ 'news' when it's happening in the privacy of our homes. Frankly, I'm sick of "freedom of the press" - which exists to ensure freedom of _political_ speech - being abused and misused just to harass the public and invent salacious garbage for tabloid consumption. Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Speech was, and is, designed to prevent government institutions from targeting dissenting citizens with retaliatory actions, to ensure we have the right to make political comment as we see fit - it is _not_ for spying on private citizens and muck-raking.
