Rising Mendenhall Lake level trends over the last 24 hours coupled with the lack of any substantial rainfall during the last 18 hours indicate a glacial dam release into the lake. There are a number of basins including Suicide within the Mendenhall Glacier from which the release may occur. At this time the source of the release is not known. Thus there are many uncertainties regarding rising lake levels which include volume of water and peak water levels. At this point it is reasonable to expect continued rises on the lake as well as the Mendenhall River through the day as the drain continues. At 715 am Sunday morning...the lake gauge had risen to 7.2 feet and was rising at a rate of one foot every eight hours. There is a fair possibility that the lake and river will reach bankfull this afternoon and possibly rise higher tonight. Lake and river levels will continue to be monitored throughout the day and information will be released as more is learned. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0820: Cloudy, some very slight - tiny breaks, a few bits and wisps of clouds around the mainland mountains, weak - very weak sunshine on most of the top of Mt. "The discovery of the polyomavirus SV40, as well as its introduction as a pathogen into the human population, was tied to the development and worldwide distribution of early forms of the polio vaccine. Inactivated (Salk) and early live attenuated (Sabin) forms of polio vaccines were inadvertently contaminated with SV40. In addition, different adenovirus vaccines distributed to some U.S. military personnel from 1961 to 1965 also contained SV40. The viral contamination occurred because these early vaccines were prepared in primary cultures of kidney cells derived from rhesus monkeys, which are often naturally infected with SV40. Infectious SV40 survived the vaccine inactivation treatments, and conservative estimates indicate that up to 30 million people (children and adults) in the United States may have been exposed to live SV40 from 1955 through 1963 when administered potentially contaminated polio vaccines. Millions of people worldwide were also potentially exposed to SV40 because contaminated polio vaccines were distributed and used in many countries. These data led the Institute of Medicine to conclude that “the biological evidence is of moderate strength that SV40 exposure from the polio vaccine is related to SV40 infection in humans”. Do an internet search for polio vaccine and simian virus for more information not in the paper. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 3:24 PM AKDT on June 04, 2015 ...Significant rises possible on area rivers and streams Saturday night... With the first of two significant rain events nearly over...area rivers have responded with only modest increases in stage. The very dry ground from record dry weather this past may has allowed most if not all rainfall to either infiltrate down or become absorbed by vegetation rather than become runoff. Additionally...close coordination with the river forecast center and adjustments to watershed models to account for a lack of higher elevation snow pack has resulted in diminished forecast stage levels for the major rivers and streams. In summary, some minor rises over area streams and rivers will occur Thursday night. Looking forward...the potential of heavier rainfall Saturday night with the next system will cause the ground to approach saturation so rises in the Chilkat, the Taiya, the Situk are forecast...but are expected to remain at or below action stage. In the Juneau area...Montana and Jordan creeks will be faster to respond to moderate to heavy rainfall. These systems are...however...also forecast to remain at or below action stage at this time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1500: .11" of Rainfall to this point today. 1450: Cloudy, clouds skimming Mt. JUNEAU BOROUGH AND NORTHERN ADMIRALTY ISLAND- INCLUDING THE CITY OF...JUNEAU NWS Special Statement Statement as of 5:48 AM AKDT on June 03, 2015 ...Glacier dam release into Mendenhall Lake ending... The Glacier dam release of Suicide Basin which drains into Mendenhall Lake and River has ended for this event. Due to the rapid influx of water the Mendenhall Lake crested at 7.6 feet at 1130 PM Tuesday night. It has since fallen below 7 feet and is continuing to recede quickly. Flood stage for the lake is 9.0 feet. Overall the lake level rose 3 feet since Saturday. Water levels will remain high in the lake and Mendenhall River through Wednesday however they are expected to continue to fall through the day. The Suicide Basin will remain under careful observation to see if it refills for another release later this summer. This will be the final statement for this event. Bezenek ----------------------------------------------------------------- When the Bank Secrecy Act was enacted in 1970 to counter the Mafia (and wrongly held up by the U.S. Supreme Court, it WAS challenged on constitutional grounds), the amount of $10,000 was specified in the law (and in a later amendment $5,000 transactions could be cause for Suspicious Activity Reports). If the law was properly updated to take into account inflation, the amount would be some $100,000 today. In 1970 our full size (huge) station wagon was a bit over $5,000, the equivalent today... $40,000 to 50,000. You can't even buy half of most cars for $10,000 today. The State Office Building in Juneau cost $12 million dollars in 1974 but would cost at least 10 times that today. But... the powers that be in government want the noose on the American people to be drawn ever tighter because they want power and control. "You are all guilty until YOU prove yourself innocent."
