NWS Special Statement Statement as of 5:18 PM AKDT on July 28, 2015 ...Mendenhall Lake now receding... The Mendenhall Lake crested at 8.4 feet at 4 PM akdt and is now falling. This is above the bankfull level of 8 feet but below the minor flood stage of 9 feet. The lake and river levels will fall quickly over the next 24 hours despite continued rainfall. It is likely that a glacial dammed lake above the Mendenhall Glacier combined with heavy rain over the past 24 hours was the cause of water levels to rise on Mendenhall Lake and river. This will be the final statement on this event. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 3:02 PM AKDT on July 28, 2015 ...Mendenhall Lake at bankfull... Based on the recent steady rise in Mendenhall Lake levels it is likely that a glacial dammed lake on the Mendenhall Glacier is releasing water. This combined with heavy rain over the past 24 hours is causing water levels to rise on Mendenhall Lake and river. The lake is currently at 8.3 feet as of 2:15 PM and rising steadily. Water levels are expected to continue rising steadily until the Glacier Dam Lake is completely drained. At this time...the lake is expected to crest later this evening before steadily falling overnight. There is a lot of uncertainty in this event so please stay tuned to the National Weather Service for updates. This statement will be updated by midnight akdt or sooner if conditions warrant. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1500: .53" of Rainfall to this point today. 1450: Very Light Rain, Cloudy, brighter, very top - top of Mt. My opinion on AFCI's: I oppose them being mandated (the key word) by code because of KISS (Keep it simple stupid), the nuisance tripping, the inability to use power tools and many vacuum cleaners on the circuits (exacerbated as more and more areas of a house are required to have them), and the likelihood of failure of the electronic circuitry... a brand new house likely would not need the protection, and by the time the house is old, the AFCI's won't be working... or a lot of money will be spent on replacing them over and over again. At 5 PM akdt Friday...the water level at Mendenhall Lake was 7.6 feet...and is forecast to crest at 9 feet Saturday afternoon. A lake level of 9 feet will result in water inundation of West Glacier Spur Road between Skaters Cabin and the West Glacier trailhead. Water will also begin to flow into the Mendenhall Lake campground. There is considerable uncertainty regarding the source of water resulting in the rising lake and river levels. Therefore...it is possible the actual crest could be above or below the forecast crest. Water levels will continue to be monitored closely...and this statement will be updated by 12 am akdt Saturday or sooner. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1705: Cloudy, some very tiny - extremely tiny breaks, almost extremely weak to very weak sunshine, SE very top of Mt. Special Statement Statement as of 5:11 AM AKDT on July 02, 2015 ...Taku River continuing to rise due to Glacier dam release through Thursday afternoon... Water levels on the Taku River are continuing to rise this morning due to the glacial dam release of Lake No Lake on the Tulsequah Glacier. Water temperatures have started to level out which may indicate the glacial dam released is near ending and the river is close to cresting. At 4 am...the Taku River was at 41.5 feet and is expected to crest at 42.8 feet at about 10 am. Minor flood stage for the Taku River is 43.0 feet with bankfull level conditions at 42.0 feet. There is still uncertainty regarding the amount of water that will be released into the Taku River so the crest height and timing may differ from the forecast. Increased flow on the river will continue to result in floating debris of trees and ice chunks flowing down the Taku River. Colder than normal water temperatures have an increased threat of hypothermia for anyone falling into the water. Persons are encouraged to take extra precautions while recreating on the Taku River through the event. Water levels will fall quickly after the crest Thursday morning receding below 41.0 feet by Thursday afternoon. The next statement for this event will be issued by 4 PM akdt Thursday. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 0504: Power Glitch in West Juneau.
