"Glacier Bay was first surveyed in 1794 by a team from the H.M.S. Discovery, captained by George Vancouver. At that time, the survey showed a mere indentation in the shoreline. The massive glacier was more than 4,000 feet thick in places, up to 20 miles wide, and extended more than 100 miles to the St. Elias mountain range. By 1879, however, naturalist John Muir discovered that the ice had retreated more than 30 miles forming an actual bay. By 1916, the Grand Pacific Glacier – the main glacier credited with carving the bay – had melted back 60 miles to the head of what is now Tarr Inlet." NWS Areal Flood Watch Statement as of 3:34 PM AKDT on August 19, 2015 ...Flood Watch remains in effect until late this evening for the Mendenhall Lake and River... The Flood Watch continues for * the Mendenhall Lake and River near Juneau. * Until late this evening * Suicide Basin Glacier dammed lake appears to be releasing again as Mendenhall Lake has been rising through the day. As of 3 PM it is currently at 8.5 feet below the minor flood stage of 9 feet and nearly steady. * It is uncertain how high Mendenhall Lake and River will get as water volume in suicide basin before it released was unknown. Combined with the heavy rain from yesterday which caused Mendenhall Lake and River to start at a higher level then previous releases this Summer...means that the possibility is there for the lake to rise past minor flood stage of 9 feet this evening. Whether it reaches minor flood stage or not Mendenhall Lake and river are then expected to crest and start receding later this evening. At 9 feet water will start to flow over West Glacier Spur Road near Skaters Cabin and start to flow into Mendenhall Lake campground. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of flooding in and close to the watch area. Persons living along Mendenhall Lake and River should stay alert and be prepared to take action if a warning or advisory is issued...or flooding is observed. This statement will be updated by midnight akdt tonight or sooner if conditions warrant. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1500: .07" of Rainfall to this point today. 1450: Cloudy, some very small and tiny breaks, variable extremely weak to weakened sunshine in areas, SE very top of Mt. Damage to the vessel’s starboard propeller due to a log strike was discovered while the ferry was delayed in Ketchikan. This will require the ferry to be dry docked for repairs. The vessel is now scheduled to return to passenger service August 31, 2015. MV Malaspina has been rerouted to sail the Bellingham, Wash. to Southeast Alaska schedule, effectively replacing the MV Columbia through August 30. MV LeConte will sail a revised schedule in Northern Southeast Alaska to accommodate passengers affected by the MV Malaspina change in service off of the Northern Lynn Canal dayboat run. AMHS staff is contacting all affected passengers who require rebooking or notification of the revised schedules. The sailing schedule is currently being revised and will be posted online at FerryAlaska.com as quickly as possible. This significant scheduling change has also delayed the release of the 2015-2016 Winter Schedule. The winter schedule is now expected to be released next week. 1239: Very, very light sprinkling, cloudy, brighter, upper part of Mt. Juneau and most of the upper part - top of Mt. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 4:00 PM AKDT on August 16, 2015 ...Heavy rain will cause rivers to rise significantly by Tuesday... A weather front moving across the northeastern Gulf Coast to the northern half of the Panhandle will bring occasional heavy rainfall Monday through Tuesday morning. Local rivers and streams are currently running low...therefore a significant amount of rainfall is needed for the rivers and streams to rise to bankfull conditions or minor flood stages. Most intense rain is expected over Monday night. Storm total rainfall amounts will range from 4 to 6 inches along the northeast Gulf Coast...southeast of Yakutat and west of Cross Sound. Around 1 to 3 inches of rainfall are forecasted across the northern half of the Panhandle. The heavy rainfall will likely cause water levels to increase several feet for streams and rivers in the area. At this time...the National Weather Service is focusing on forecasted rivers and streams across the northern and central Panhandle. Chilkat River near Haines and Jordan Creek in Juneau are forecasted to reach bankfull conditions by Tuesday morning. Taiya River near Skagway...Mendenhall Lake and Montana Creek in Juneau are predicted to reach minor flood stage by Tuesday morning. In addition ungauged small streams over the area are excepted to rise significantly. Stay tuned to the National Weather Service for further updates on this event.
