...WATER LEVEL IN THE SUICIDE BASIN CONTINUES TO RISE...
SUICIDE BASIN IS DAMMED BY THE MENDENHALL GLACIER AND CONTINUES TO
ACCUMULATE WATER FROM RAINFALL AND SNOW MELT...RAISING THE WATER
LEVEL. THE WATER LEVEL IN THE BASIN IS UNDER CONTINUOUS
MONITORING BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND HAS VISUALLY
EXCEEDED THE APPROXIMATE LEVEL FROM THE 2012 GLACIER DAM RELEASE
EVENT.
IT TAKES BETWEEN 1 AND 2 DAYS FOR WATER FROM SUICIDE BASIN TO
START AFFECTING THE WATER LEVEL IN MENDENHALL LAKE AND RIVER ONCE
THE BASIN STARTS TO DRAIN. THE CREST OF THIS EVENT ROUGHLY OCCURS 4
DAYS FROM WHEN THE RAPID RELEASE ON THE BASIN IS FIRST NOTED. A
GLACIER DAM RELEASE OCCURS WHEN THERE IS SUFFICIENT WATER PRESSURE
TO LIFT THE GLACIER ALLOWING THE WATER FROM THE BASIN TO START
DRAINING UNDER THE GLACIER. AT THIS TIME THE BASIN GAUGE
IS REPORTING A WATER LEVEL ABOVE 60 FEET AND THIS EVENT COULD
OCCUR AT ANY TIME.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS NOT ISSUED ANY FLOOD
WATCH...WARNING...OR ADVISORY FOR THE MENDENHALL LAKE AND RIVER.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE
SITUATION AND WILL ISSUE PRODUCTS AS NEEDED. RESIDENTS ALONG THE
THE MENDENHALL RIVER AND LAKE SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE ANY
