COLDER AIR FROM 500 MB DOWN TO NEAR THE SURFACE IS BEING ADVECTED INTO THE NORTHERN GULF AND THEN EASTWARD TOWARDS THE PANHANDLE BY THE LOW AND TROUGH, ENHANCING AN ALREADY CONVECTIVE ENVIRONMENT. THE 12Z YAKUTAT UPPER AIR SOUNDING IS MODERATELY CONVECTIVE WITH A LIFTED INDEX OF -0.4 AND CAPE OF 252 J/KG. MODELED CAPE VALUES APPROACHING 500 J/KG AND A LARGE AREA OVER THE GULF WITH NEGATIVE LIFTED INDEX VALUES IS MOVING EAST WITH THE COLDER AIR. SATELLITE IMAGERY IS LOOKING MORE CONVECTIVE THAN YESTERDAY AND HEAVY SHOWERS HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPORTED IN YAKUTAT. FINALLY, SPORADIC LIGHTNING HAS BEEN DETECTED THROUGH THE NIGHT. SET UP INDICATES GOOD POTENTIAL FOR MARITIME AS WELL AS OVERLAND THUNDERSTORMS FOR THIS SHORT TERM FORECAST PERIOD. THUNDERSTORMS HAVE A LOW FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE IN THIS REGION, BUT CAN ALSO BE A HIGH IMPACT EVENT FOR THAT SAME REASON. IF THESE STORMS DEVELOP AS FORECAST, EXPECT TO SEE ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS REACH AS FAR EAST AS JUNEAU BY LATE THIS AFTERNOON. SOUTHERLY EXTENT SHOULD BE DOWN TO KRUZOF ISLAND AND ANGOON. TO THE NORTH, AS FAR NORTH AS BERNERS BAY, THEN WEST ACROSS SOUTHERN LYNN CANAL, THEN NORTH TO NEAR THE HAINES HIGHWAY. IN SPITE OF SHOWERS BEING CAPABLE OF PRODUCING SOME HEAVY, BUT SHORT LIVED PRECIPITATION, AM NOT EXPECTING LARGE ACCUMULATIONS OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT 24 HOURS AS THEY TRACK EAST ACROSS SOUTHEAST ALASKA. GUSTY WINDS IMPLICIT IN OR NEAR THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY, BUT HAVE NOT BROKEN THIS OUT SEPARATELY IN THE FORECAST. ONLY SUSTAINED MARINE WINDS OF SIGNIFICANCE CONTINUE TO BE OVER NORTHERN LYNN CANAL, WHERE SMALL CRAFT CONDITIONS CONTINUED THROUGH THE NIGHT AND ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE DAY TODAY. SHOULD SEE WINDS UP THERE RELAX SOMEWHAT TONIGHT. NOT A LOT OF WIND IN HAINES, BUT SKAGWAY HAS BEEN BREEZY WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 MPH ALL NIGHT AS WINDS FROM LYNN CANAL FUNNEL UP TAIYA INLET...AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO THROUGH THE DAY TODAY. ELSEWHERE, 20 KTS OR LESS ON THE OUTSIDE AND 15 KTS OR LESS ON THE INSIDE. PATCHY FOG CONTINUES TO BE A CONCERN AND SEVERAL PLACES SAW VISIBILITIES DOWN TO 1/2 MILE OR LESS OVERNIGHT. THAT SITUATION SHOULD IMPROVE THROUGH THE MORNING, BUT FOG WILL RETURN AGAIN TONIGHT UNDER LIGHT WINDS. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 0750: Rain, Cloudy, upper part of Mt. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 1:57 PM AKDT on August 16, 2014 ...More heavy rain to spread into northern panhandle Saturday night to Sunday night... Two separate trailing waves in the upper level flow will move across the North Pacific and the Gulf Alaska then into the Panhandle over the weekend. Each wave will be ushering in a pocket of tropical moisture. The first wave will be headed into the Yakutat region by Saturday afternoon and overnight. Expecting between 2 and 4 inches of rain over 36 hours in Yakutat. The Situk River is at 68.4 feet as of Saturday afternoon and expect the rain to bring water levels back up and may approach bankfull as the ground is already saturated. A portion of the first feature will start to spread rain into the coastal area around Cross Sound and the northern Panhandle Saturday night. Heaviest rainfall for the northern Panhandle will be Sunday morning and then continue into Sunday night when the second of the features moves inland over the southeast Panhandle. Rainfall amounts are expected to be around 2 inches for a 24 hour period...with roughly 1 to 1.5 inches falling in a variable 12 hour period of Sunday and Sunday night. The region around Wrangell and Petersburg will be the last areas to pick up the heavier rains Sunday night. The Taiya River near Skagway has fallen below bankfull and is expected to rise again to above minor flood stage of 16.5 feet by Sunday. Many of the small streams and rivers...including Montana Creek in Juneau...will rapidly refill and approach bankfull levels or possibly overflow as well. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 8:34 AM AKDT on August 09, 2014 ...Wet weekend expected for the Panhandle... Three to six inches of rain is expected to fall over Southeast Alaska Saturday night and Sunday. Generally speaking between one quarter and three quarters of an inch of rain has been reported around the Panhandle since Friday. Rainfall intensity will increase Saturday and the period of heaviest rain will be Saturday night and Sunday morning. Rivers and streams will be on the rise over the weekend. In particular...the Taiya and Chilkat rivers may reach bankfull by Sunday night. Another source of concern are some of the smaller...faster responding creeks such as Montana Creek...and Jordan Creek in Juneau...Staney Creek on Prince of Wales Island and Indian River near Sitka which could show steep rises during heavier periods of rain. People living along these waterways should remain vigilant through the weekend. Prepare for rising water levels...clear storm drains...and check that bilge pumps are working on boats. The rain is associated with a slow moving frontal system and an unseasonably wet air mass streaming inland from the Pacific. Winds may be gusty at times over the weekend. With three to six inches of rain forecast over just a couple of days...small landslides are possible Sunday and Monday in steeper terrain. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 0835: Very Light Rain, Cloudy. 0750: Very Light Sprinkling, Cloudy, low ribbon Channel side of Mt. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 1:52 PM AKDT on August 08, 2014 ...Wet weekend expected for the Panhandle... A wet front will be stalling over the Panhandle this weekend with several disturbances riding along the front through early next week.
