NWS: Public Information Statement Statement as of 7:27 PM AKDT on July 20, 2013 ...June 2013 one of the warmest on record for Alaska... Much of Alaska experienced some of the warmest weather on record in June. The only exceptions were Bering Sea coastal areas from the Seward Peninsula south to the Alaska Peninsula...where temperatures...while above normal overall...were not in the top ten warmest for the month. Most outstanding was the extreme heat mid-month over portions of southern and western Alaska. Several locations with observations extending back more than 70 years broke all-time record highs...including 96 degrees at Talkeetna...94 degrees at McGrath and 90 degrees at both Cordova and Valdez. At Bethel...the high of 88 degrees on the 18th is the second highest temperature on record in more than 90 years of observations. On the 19th Nome tied the all-time record high of 86 degrees. At Juneau...the high temperature of 85 degrees on the 16th was the warmest temperature in the capital city since June 2004 and the third warmest temperature recorded in Juneau since at least 1944. The last week of the month was especially warm in the interior. At Fairbanks...the low temperature of 70 degrees on the 25th may be the highest reliable calendar day low temperature ever recorded in Alaska. The average temperature at the Fairbanks Airport for the week of June 23rd to 29th was 74.8 degrees...is the warmest week ever at Fairbanks...and may be the warmest week on record at any location in Alaska. Preliminary data indicates the following rankings for average temperatures for June: Barrow...39.0 degrees...the warmest since Weather Bureau observations began in 1920. Juneau Airport...57.9 degrees...the second warmest June on record. Fairbanks...66.8 degrees...the third warmest June on record. Anchorage...58.9 degrees...the third warmest June on record. Kodiak...53.8 degrees...the forth warmest June on record and the warmest since 1953. Rainfall...while below normal in many places...including Juneau...was not in the lowest ten. The unusually warm weather was the result of stagnant high pressure aloft centered over the state. That pattern has changed since the beginning of this month and daily average temperatures so far in Juneau in July are 0.7 degrees below normal. The temperature at the Juneau Airport has only exceeded 70 degrees on three days as of July 20th. While the above listed temperatures have been carefully checked...they are still considered preliminary values and subject to final quality control..which in a few cases may change these rankings. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1920: Rain/Drizzle, Cloudy, mainland substantially obscured and hidden. 1850: Light Rain/Drizzle, Cloudy, very top and SE top of Mt. NWS Flood Watch / Flood Statement Statement as of 9:37 PM AKDT on July 08, 2013 ...The Flood Advisory has been cancelled for Montana Creek near Juneau and possible small mudslides... Montana Creek crested around 16.9 feet at 630 PM this evening well above minor flood stage of 15.5 feet and just below the moderate flood stage of 17 feet. We have not received any reports of damage from the flooding this evening. Currently the creek is at 15.1 feet about a half a foot below minor flood stage and continuing to drop. It is expected to continue to drop through the night as showers diminish over the area. We also had a report of a small mudslide on Glacier Highway near Wickersham Avenue around 7 PM. No reports of damage came in from this and we have received no other reports of mudslides in the area. With showers in the area diminishing more small mudslides are not expected. NWS Areal Flood Advisory Statement as of 7:07 PM AKDT on July 08, 2013 ...The small stream Flood Advisory remains in effect until 1100 PM akdt for Montana Creek near Juneau and for the possibility of small mudslides... At 600 PM akdt...the Montana Creek river gage was at 16.8 feet and slowly rising. This is over a foot above minor flood stage of 15.5 feet. A small mudslide was also reported by the public near Wickersham Avenue. Heavy showers moved over the Juneau area between 1 and 4 PM this afternoon and dropped up to three quarters of an inch of rain in around an hour on the Mendenhall Valley. Montana Creek has rapidly responded rising above minor flood stage of 15.5 feet around 5 PM this evening. It is currently at 16.8 feet and its rate of rise has slowed down. At this level there is likely around a foot or more of water flowing over the low water crossing on Montana Creek Road and some water in low lying areas along the creek. Montana Creek is expected to crest in the next hour or two around 16.9 feet before falling as the showers move out of the area. It is not expected to make moderate flood stage which is at 17 feet We also received a spotter report of a small mudslide on Glacier Highway near Wickersham Avenue. No damage or disruption reported at this time. The possibility of more small mudslides still exists with the showers that are still moving through the area. Rain will cause considerable ponding of water in low lying areas, near culverts, and along small creeks and drainages. Precautionary/preparedness actions... When the river gauge on Montana Creek reads 15 ft water will begin to flow over the Montana Creek Road just before the gun range in the Juneau area. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground. Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any minor flooding to your law enforcement agency. They will relay your report to the National Weather Service forecast office in Juneau. AT 235 PM AKDT...WATERS ON THE TAKU RIVER ARE STILL RISING FROM THE GLACIAL DAM OUTBURST FROM LAKE NOLAKE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA. THE WATER LEVEL HAS REACHED 42.0 FT AS OF 200 PM FRIDAY. THE RIVER HAS RISEN OVER 4 FEET SINCE LATE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, AND IS STILL EXPECTED TO RISE THROUGH TONIGHT TO EXCEED MINOR FLOOD STAGE OF 43.0 FT. AT THIS TIME THE RIVER IS EXPECTED TO CREST JUST ABOVE MINOR FLOOD STAGE OF 43.0 FT AND BELOW MODERATE FLOOD STAGE OF 44.0 FT. HOWEVER, GIVEN THE ONLY REPORTS OF LAKE NOLAKE WERE TAKEN TWO WEEKS AGO AND THE CONTINUING WARM SUMMER OF 2013, THERE IS SOME UNCERTAINTY AS TO WHEN AND HOW HIGH THE RIVER WILL CREST FROM THE OUTBURST. HISTORICALLY THE WATERS CREST BETWEEN 2 AND 3 DAYS FROM THE FIRST RISE SHOWN AT THE GAGE. HOWEVER, THIS IS AN EARLIER RELEASE THAN NORMAL WHICH MAY BE INDICATIVE OF A RELEASE BEFORE THE BASIN WAS FULL. WATERS MAY CREST ANYTIME BETWEEN FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY AND WHILE WATERS ARE MOST LIKELY TO CREST BETWEEN MINOR AND MODERATE FLOOD STAGE, THERE IS STILL A CHANCE WATERS WILL RISE ABOVE MODERATE FLOOD STAGE. AT 43.3 FT THE WATER LEVEL WILL BE AT THE TOP OF THE HILL IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE NEAR THE GAGE. THIS IS MINOR FLOODING. AT 44.7 FT THE WATER LEVEL WILL BE AT THE DOOR JAM OF THE HOUSE NEAR THE GAGE. THIS IS MODERATE FLOODING. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... IF YOU LIVE NEAR OR ALONG THE TAKU RIVER STAY ALERT AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION. THE COLD WATER TEMPERATURES CAN INCREASE THE THREAT OF HYPOTHERMIA AND LOWER THE TIME REQUIRED TO CAUSE HYPOTHERMIA.
