Taku River Areal Flood Advisory Statement as of 2:05 PM AKDT on July 30, 2012 The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a * Flood Advisory for a glacial dammed lake outburst on the... Taku River * until 400 am akdt Wednesday * at 109 PM akdt...the Taku River reached 39.74 feet. The water level along the Taku River has continued to steadily rise with the water temperatures falling. This indicates the glacial dammed lake above the Taku Glacier known as Lake No Lake is releasing. * At the current rate the river would crest around 43.1 ft... just above the minor flood stage of 43 feet late Tuesday afternoon. Once the Taku River crests...the water level will steadily fall and return to normal water levels. Precautionary/preparedness actions... If you live near or along the Taku River stay alert and be prepared to take action as water levels rise and as outflow from the river reaches low lying areas. Pieces of debris will also likely be seen on the river as a result of the release. The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia and lower the time required to cause hypothermia. Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio for updates on this situation. A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding of water is occurring or is imminent. THE WATER LEVEL ALONG THE TAKU RIVER HAS CONTINUED TO STEADILY RISE WITH THE WATER TEMPERATURE FALLING THROUGH MONDAY MORNING. THIS INDICATES THE GLACIAL DAMMED LAKE FROM LAKE NO LAKE IS RELEASING. AS OF 8 AM AKDT MONDAY...THE WATER LEVEL STAGE WAS 39.05 FT, AND THIS IS COMPARED TO A MINOR FLOOD STAGE OF 43.0 FT. HISTORICALLY...THE ANNUAL RELEASE OCCURS AROUND THE END OF JULY. THIS EVENT TYPICALLY LASTS FOR TWO TO THREE DAYS AND WILL CAUSE THE RIVER TO RISE A TOTAL OF 5 TO 6 FT. THE RIVER WILL SLOWLY RISE AT FIRST BUT THE RATE OF CHANGE WILL INCREASE NEAR THE CREST. ONCE THE TAKU RIVER CRESTS, THE WATER LEVEL WILL STEADILY FALL AND RETURN TO NORMAL WATER LEVELS. OVER THE PAST 24 YEARS THE AVERAGE FLOW OF WATER FROM LAKE NO LAKE IS AROUND 48,000 CUBIC FEET PER SECOND. THE PRESENT FLOW IS 51,000. THE CREST IS LIKELY TO BE JUST BELOW MINOR FLOOD STAGE TUESDAY AFTERNOON. RECENT VISUAL REPORTS HAVE INDICATED THAT LAKE NO LAKE IS FULL AND POTENTIALLY HAS MORE WATER THAN USUAL. THIS COULD RESULT IN A HIGHER THAN EXPECTED RISE IN WATER LEVELS BUT AT THIS TIME THERE IS STILL UNCERTAINTY ON CREST HEIGHT. MAIN IMPACTS AT THIS TIME WILL BE COLDER THAN NORMAL WATER TEMPERATURES INCREASING THE RISK FOR HYPOTHERMIA. PIECES OF DEBRIS WILL ALSO LIKELY BE SEEN ON THE RIVER AS A RESULT OF THE RELEASE. PEOPLE ON OR ALONG THE RIVER SHOULD BE AWARE OF RISING RIVER LEVELS AND STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO FOR UPDATES ON THIS SITUATION. $$ TRUITT ------------------------------------------------------------------ 0832: Very Light Sprinkling, Cloudy, top of Mt. Move up to higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins to rise. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground. Remain cautious when in low-lying areas...and report any minor flooding to your law enforcement agency. Mendenhall Lake levels rose from 5.33 ft at 4 PM to 5.66 ft by 9:15 PM on July 4th. The Mendenhall River rose from 7.90 ft at 11 am to 8.75 ft at 10 PM on the 4th. The Mendenhall Lake is expected to rise to 9.52 ft by Thursday afternoon. Minor flood stage for the lake is 9 ft. As data is limited from the Glacier dam site there is some uncertainty with forecast water levels. The filling of the Suicide Basin Glacier dam was confirmed by a civil air patrol flight on June 23. * For the Mendenhall Lake at 9.09 ft water covers the Mendenhall Lake Spur Road from Skaters Cabin to the West Glacier trail head. Mendenhall campsite 7 will be flooded along with water flowing between campsites 8 and 9. At 9.69 ft there will be 7 inches of water over The Spur Road with water flowing into the Mendenhall campground. For the Mendenhall River at 11.5 ft yards and property of homes along View Drive start to become inundated to cause minor flooding. Boaters on Mendenhall Lake should stay well back from the Glacier face due to the likelihood of calving ice and rock from sudden water release. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of flooding in and close to the watch area. Persons living along streams should stay alert and be prepared to take action if a warning or advisory is issued...or flooding is observed. This statement will be updated by 6 am akdt Thu or sooner if conditions warrant.
