NWS Special Statement Statement as of 2:40 PM AKST on November 29, 2011 ...Changing weather pattern for Southeast Alaska mid week... Warmer temperatures, snow levels as high as 3000 feet, and rain that will be heavy at times will move to Southeast Alaska Wednesday night and Thursday. 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible across the area. The rain will fall on deep snow pack that ranges from 8 to 13 inches in the Juneau and Petersburg areas, around 45 inches at Annex Creek and Snettisham, to 53 inches in Haines. Initially the snow will absorb the rain and will lead to locally very high snow loads on roof tops, boats and other structures. As temperatures continue to rise, snow melt and heavy rain will cause increased runoff. With storm drains and ditches covered by snow and large snow berms along roads, there is the potential for ponding of water in low lying areas Wednesday night and Thursday. Standing water on icy surfaces will make roads and sidewalks extremely slippery. Also, as the freezing levels rise, avalanche danger will increase along mountain slopes up to at least 3000 feet. Persons in Southeast Alaska can prepare for this event by removing snow from structures, boats, and other objects than can be damaged by the excessive weight of wet snow. Clear storm drains and breach snow berms to allow for better drainage. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1350: Cloudy, a few small clear areas - breaks, very slightly obscured at the very top of Mt. NWS Special Statement Statement as of 2:44 PM AKST on November 27, 2011 ...Changing weather pattern for the Alaskan Panhandle mid week... A strong area of high pressure is forecast to build over the northeast Pacific. This will send a warm and very wet weather system into the eastern Gulf Wednesday and across Southeast Alaska by Thursday. This will bring the potential for heavy rain to area Wednesday and Thursday. The heavy rain will fall on an unusually high November snow pack which will initially result in increased snow loads on buildings, especially for the Yakutat and Haines areas. It will also increase the avalanche danger. As temperatures continue to warm and the snow melts, there will be the potential for urban type flooding where ditches and storm drains are blocked by snow. Persons across Southeast Alaska can prepare for this event by removing snow from structures and objects that can be damaged by the excessive weight of the wet snow. Storm drains should be cleared of snow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1420: Cloudy with some breaks - clear spots, very top of Mt. THE 25TH OF THE MONTH MARKS THE WETTEST AND WINDIEST DAY OF THE MONTH WITH ALMOST AN INCH OF RAIN AND OVER 50 MPH WINDS. TEMPERATURES FOR OCTOBER ENDED UP NEAR NORMAL WITH A MONTHLY MEAN TEMPERATURE OF 42.2 DEGREES...ONLY TWO TENTH OF A DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THE GREATEST VARIANCE FROM NORMAL TEMPERATURE VALUES WAS THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WHEN THE MERCURY ONLY REACHED 28 DEGREES ON THE THIRD...MAKING IT 3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE TOOK A DIFFERENT DIRECTION WHEN IT FELL SHORT OF THE NORMAL BY TWO DEGREES...ONLY REACHING 53 DEGREES ON THE FIRST. THERE WAS A TOTAL OF ONLY 4 DAYS THAT FELL BELOW FREEZING...MOST OF WHICH OCCURRED AT THE TOP OF THE MONTH WITH THE MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES. THE RAINFALL AMOUNT FOR OCTOBER WAS JUST SHY OF 1 1/4 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS MAY NOT SEEM TO BE TRUE WITH ONLY TWO DAYS WITHOUT ANY RAINFALL AND ANOTHER TWO DAYS WITH ONLY TRACE AMOUNTS...GIVING US 27 DAYS OF MEASUREABLE RAIN. THE MONTH STARTED OUT RELATIVELY DRY WITH DAILY RAINFALL AMOUNTS LESS THAN TWO TENTHS OF AN INCH. THEN BY THE 12TH OVER A HALF AN INCH (0.58) WAS COLLECTED FOR THE DAY...ALMOST DOUBLING THE MONTHLY TOTAL TO THAT DATE (1.17). THE LARGEST AMOUNT OF RAIN FELL ON THE 25TH WHEN NEARLY 1 INCH (0.99) POURED DOWN. OCTOBER BROUGHT ICE PELLETS ON THE 19TH WHICH MEASURED 0.3 INCHES BE THE END OF THE EVENT BUT QUICKLY MELTED AWAY. THE LAST TWO DAYS OF THE MONTH SAW THE FIRST SNOW FLAKES FALL...ALTHOUGH VERY WET BEING MIXED WITH RAIN SO ONLY TRACE AMOUNTS WERE MEASURED. THE 25TH IS THE AVERAGE DATE FOR SNOWFALL TO BEGIN WITH NO REAL SNOW ACCUMULATION UNTIL MID NOVEMBER...MAKING THIS OCTOBER NOT TOO FAR OFF THE MARK.
