Cold air will remain over Southeast Alaska through the end of the week. A potent front will lift over the area Thursday night into Friday and an overrunning snow event may take place. There is a potential for 6 to 15 inches of snow from the warm moist air associated with the weather front being lifted over the cold air at the surface across the Panhandle. As the front lifts over the area the southern areas will see the snow mix with rain Friday as warmer air moves in...at this time it looks like the rest of the Panhandle will remain all snow. A low pressure system will move into the western Gulf Thursday and drift into the northern Gulf by Friday and strengthen to near 968 mb. The front associated with the low will track across the Gulf through Thursday and begin to affect the western portions of the Panhandle Thursday night and spread east through Friday. Along with the potential for snow the front will also increase the winds along the coastal and southern areas to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph. Other areas will see locally windy conditions...mainly from interior gaps. Marine areas will see winds increase to gales over east/west channels and coastal waters. Gusts to 50 kt near interior gaps can be expected as the front lifts over the area late Thursday into Friday. Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite local weather news source for updates on this situation. A low pressure system will move northeast out of the northern Pacific toward the Panhandle while an Arctic front moves south out of the Yukon on Monday. This combination will bring in temperatures below freezing across the northern Panhandle and at the same time the low pressure system will bring in moisture from the Gulf. The potential exist for significant snowfall across the northern Panhandle. The potential for heavy snowfall is dependent on where the Arctic front positions itself for the event. At the moment the greatest potential for heavy snowfall will be between Juneau and Haines. This system bears watching for next several days and further statements will be issued as needed. This statement will be updated by 4 PM akst Sunday or sooner if needed.
